Dis...a..pointing. Our first shot at finding a great bagel in NYC was a big miss. It's not often that Yelp let's me down. But Murray's is a far less than amazing bagel joint. The upside is that they lavish a ton of cream cheese on your selected carrier and the lox are tasty.

Solid NY bagels. I wonder why they dont toast their bagels but nothing to complain about because they are still tasty! Don't forget the fresh squeezed OJ, yum!

  • Matt E.

So they won't toast their bagels here, not sure why they think toasting a bagel makes it less authentic but that's their stance on the matter. If you don't come here early enough and get a fresh hot one then you're just out of luck. I wanted to see what their house made hand rolled bagels were all about but I just found it to be a tad drier with a thicker outer shell to gnaw on then what I've had elsewhere. They were still pretty decent bagels though. They also had a fantastic looking selection of other options including some great looking pastries. Bagels are $1 but adding even cream cheese will more than double that, pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I paid almost $4 for a bagel with cream cheese and a water. They haven't been around long enough to be a New York institution but they've got some national recognition (like a spot on the Travel Channel) so the hype is hard to ignore.

Fast service no matter what day or time of the week it is, which is clutch when it comes to NYC bagels. Plus the guys always throw in free pickles whenever I stop in and ask nicely. P.S. they do not toast bagels P.P.S their homemade tuna salad is a personal fave

  • Lisbeth Z.

Yes yes yes. Sunday morning go to. Don't be afraid of the big line, they are quick and efficient and have it all under control. The bagels are the best - love the lox. The staff is super friendly and will remember you if you are a regular. Especially if you stop by a few times when it's not super busy. Yum. Oh, and they don't toast because the bagels are made fresh that morning. You only need to toast a bagel if its stale.

Really awesome, large, New York bagels. Check out the veggie cream cheese, as well. Yum.

4.5 stars rounded to 5. Of the three bagel places I've been to, this one was slightly better than the others. Fresh bagels with many choices of spreads. The everything bagel was good. They don't toast bagels here and although I usually always ask for my bagels toasted, IT WAS STILL JUST AS GOOD even though it was not toasted. Who would've thought? The consistency of the bagel was just that good. The lox and cream cheese (not cream cheese lox) was generous and very good. We got the smoked salmon belly with their scallion cream cheese, and man was it good. Definitely worth it and a must try. I like how the shop is set up and it was a really chill spot to just sit and enjoy your bagel. The walls are decorated very cute and inviting. TIP: They also have lots of goodies (cookies, baked goods) and specialty sandwiches, so if you want more than a bagel and cream cheese, they have other options as well. They also had lunch specials too.

This place is great. It was about 12 blocks from my hotel with no convenient subway lines running near it. Walking is always the best way to see the city anyway. Bagels are hand made and tasted great. We had breakfast sandwiches and tried a few bagels with cream cheese. Cream cheese was very good and they stuff so much between each slice that it oozed out in big pieces. Coffee was ok. The only downer is there's no bathroom so I had to walk across the street to the Starbucks shop to take care of business. I like to say I'd come back but there are so many great deli's and bakeries in NYC that I probably won't but don't let that stop you. If your in the area definitively grab a bagel.

  • Varun V.

I felt like a moron because the first time i went i asked for my bagel to be toasted. Don't do that. Apparently the little suckers are so fresh that they refuse to toast them and ruin it for you. I always get the same thing - everything bagel with regular cream cheese and i've got to say despite the 1000 other things on the menu - it's so bloody perfectly executed i have absolutely no desire to try anything else. Who knew bagels could be so fantastic?

Can't leave NYC without trying a NY bagel right? So we ventured in here and shared an everything bagel with cream cheese. Part of my half was still warm and not chewy, so good! They also deliver via seamless! This place actually has a lunch menu and soup too but I just wanted the bagel. They open at 6:30am.

  • N B.

So this is what a NYC bagel is like? Great. I'm not sure if I can eat a bagel from anywhere else in the country now. Murray's ruined me.

Best bagels in the city, hands down!

  • Alana E.

Love bagels, even if they are not toasted? The bagels are awesome. Tons of cream cheese - and VEGAN cream cheese too - Organic bagels - lox - breakfast sandwiches too. Be prepared to wait in line for 20 minutes. then enjoy!

Peeps, I'm from Montreal.... I know when a bagel is good!!! Murray's have tasty bagels and a wide variety of spreads/toppings. However they're best consumed in store or shortly after they're purchased. They get stale fast!! Thankfully I've got tricks to warm up stale bagels, LOL!! Loved their tradition lox on bagel. So filling!! Their whole wheat everything with salmon spread was good too. Side note - they donate their leftover bagels to charity. God bless their generosity =)

Had breakfast here, a plain bagel with cream cheese and lax, and ofc black coffee. 5 of 5

  • Nina T.

I love this place! There bagels are fresh and delicious, they have a huge variety of cream cheeses, fish, lox, toppings and just about anything you can dream of. Everything is so good i have trouble deciding what to get. They also have a tons of drinks to choose from and treats, salads, and baked goods! I LOVE the poppy seed bagel with scallion cream cheese, tomato and white fish! YUMMM. If you are in a rush, or not, looking for a quick bite to eat and a delicious taste of new york, this is the place to go.

  • Randy G.

Delicious! I got a garlic bagel with some Nova Scotia on it, and it was fantastic. Perfectly smoked fish that melted in my mouth, along with the perfect amount of schmear. Crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside, and very garlicky. The only issue I had was a $3.25 apple juice. Really?

I commented on the Murray's FB page to let them know about my complaint, and they deleted it! Sketchy.

I have never written a Yelp review before in my life, and I never intended to until I went to Murray's Bagels in Chelsea. This place is so great that I had to add my voice to this page. If you're in the area, make sure you stop by. You absolutely will not regret it. The bagels are great (I get the whole wheat everything with jalapeno cream cheese), and the people have been so friendly and welcoming to me since I moved into the neighborhood a month ago. I must be going during off-peak hours because I've never really had to wait in line. Works for me! If you're into chai tea, be sure to try theirs. It's a little pricey, but so worth it (I get mine iced). Literally the best chai I've ever had.

  • Dave H.

This was a bad experience. The line was long and it moved very slowly--the staff were taking their time with everything. And what were they taking their time on, you might ask? Certainly not toasting the bagels, because they don't! And to top everything off, my friends ordered a 1/2 dozen bagels, paid for them, and they never gave them to us.

I am in the area a lot, so I finally decided to go in...looked promising and I love bagels....I asked for a bagel toasted with butter, and they told me they don't toast. You don't Toast I said???? your a bagel store what do you mean you don't toast? News flash Murray, Toasters have been around for the last hundred years...get with the program....this is NY, the bagel capital of the world..... I happily left and went next door to get my breakfast...I guess I am one customer they will never have.......Murray's a lame disappointment..

  • adrienne b.

Pricey but great bagels. They won't toast them, but they're fresh and well made, so they don;t need it. They have after 5PM sandwich specials and a daily lunch deal which are lots of bang for your buck.

  • Mai T.

We randomly came across Murray's bagels while walking around looking for coffee. Oh my goodies...it was so good and their garlic bagel is so delicious, we had to come back again for it on our last day in nyc. Their cream cheese was so light and fluffy, it just makes u wanna scream. So the 2nd time around, I tried the onion bagel with lettuce, bacon, chicken and cheese. It was just alright, the garlic one was waaay better. My friend had the white fish with cream cheese and that was pretty delicious. I would give them 5 stars, but they get negative one because one of their employees (Vero) was very rude and unprofessional when she took our order. She just had a bad attitude. It was like, geez, someone is pmsing today! Anyway, yay for good nyc bagels!!

    (4)
  • Nob H.

It's not the fact that they won't toast my bagel as the way in which they sneer at me when I request it that makes me slightly dislike Murray's. Still, the portions are huge, and the cream cheese is good. Not the best I've had, but I guess it'll do.

    (2)
  • Jessie D.

Very mediocre doughy bagel It almost taste like non-NY bagels.

I love Murray's! My favorite NY bagels for sure and they have great coffee too.

If there is anything in this neighborhood a pregnant gal craves, it's Murray's Bagels. There has yet to be a week in the past 3 months that I havent told my hubby to go on a bagel run (everything with scallion cream cheese!) for me and there hearty bagels and fresh spreads always hit the spot.

    (5)
  • Ali S.

We love Murray's Bagels! The tofu cream cheese is one of my favorites! The best breakfast spot in Chelsea! My girlfriend loves the lox. Everything is really fresh and the people who work there are always friendly and helpful.

    Best bagels

    (5)
  • Kenneth E.

Bagel Bliss - it's a shame they are only in NYC. They have a very wide variety of "stuffings" to put in a bagel. Keeping it simple, one of the best tasting is just plain butter on a sesame or poppy. A real sensation is cream cheese on an onion or garlic or "everything"! Be sure to order the coffee - VG and made frequently.

    (5)
  • abby f.

Good service friendly staff, a bit pricey but love their soups with an everything bagel!!

    (4)
  • Zachary F.

Good bagels, but these are not as good as Absolute Bagels, and they are more expensive because Murray's caters to a richer crowd. This is a better place to get a bagel and lox sandwich and sit around than Absolute Bagels, though, if you're into that kind of thing.

    (4)
  • Katie K.

Fantastic bagels! Have tried many of the spreads, my favorite is the jalepeno cream cheese on a whole wheat bagel. Or if I'm really hungry (or going to split with a friend) I'll get the "traditional"- lox, cream cheese, onion and capers. If you're in a mood for sweet, try the maple raisin walnut cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel. Don't go for an egg and cheese sandwich here- not worth the very long wait! And coffee kind of sucks here. But the bagels.... amazing!!

    (5)
  • Laurie M.

Great bagels but the WORST when it comes to screwing up orders for delivery. I've received the wrong order 3 out of the last 4 times and this time, they couldn't even bother to apologize. Instead, the woman said, "I didn't pack your order...." Seriously?! Management: GET IT TOGETHER!!!

  • Joseph P.

Great food but terrible customer service by gentleman with goatee that works there at 6:30AM. Very rude, I sent a letter of complaint but no response.

  • Charlotte P.

I did not know a bagel could be so delicious until I ate at Murray's bagels. Now I see what everyone is talking about, these bagels are amazing. Even with my bagel scooped it was doughy on the inside and flavorful and a little bit crisper on the outside. The bagels all feel hot from the oven and taste extremely fresh. So far I have only tried the tuna salad, and it didn't disappoint me.

  • Tiffani D.

On a mission to find the best bagel in NYC, and I think I found it here at Murray's! Came at 11 on a Saturday morning and had to wait in line for 20 minutes. Like many NYC bagel shops, they will not toast the bagel for you, but due to the high volume of customers, the bagels are fresh and warm! Highly recommend to every bagel lover!! Didn't personally try the olive cream cheese, but I am told it is the best!!

Compared to Wonderbagels, not. That. Good :-( :-/. Mayb slightly better than the bagels I get in VA

I HONESTLY do not understand why there is any hype at all surrounding Murray's bagels. The cashier was one of the rudest people i've encountered in New York City to date. He acted in a belabored and exaggerated way about cutting open my bagel and applying the cream cheese after I asked to taste the sundried tomatoe and garlic and then decided to get scallion instead... I made the mistake of asking for it lightly toasted. He gritted his teeth and said "we don't toast! Store policy." Really, really nasty. Almost a day later, I was still thinking about it so I went online to comment on the website, but it wasn't functioning. Two bagels with cream cheese that really wasn't too appealing to me with the way it was sort of just wadded on my bagel and a can of sprite was $10.00. I would say wayy too much for the aggrivation abd the chewy bagel that could have perhaps been salvaged by a little light toasting. The wad of bland cream cheese made me nauseaus.

  • Yvonne W.

The bagels here are really, really good. You don't even need to toast them. Just slather them with a spread and stuff them into your mouth. That's what I would do! The strawberry cream cheese is SO GOOD here. They use fresh strawberries and mix them in. Sun-dried tomato cream cheese is also really good. Service here can sometimes be rude. Once we were here and my boyfriend asked for soymilk in his coffee instead of regular milk, and the Asian woman behind the counter made a sour face, slammed down the milk container so that milk splattered out, and refused to make eye contact with us when we paid. Um. Okay. Just beware that woman during busy hours.

This place is like the gold standard of bagel places. Great selection. Super fresh. Lots of great/fast service and fair prices. My friend lives right down the street so I will be here again soon!

  • Jim J.

Really good bagels, good NYC feel to it. Lox good but pricey. The neighborhood needs a place like this. It would get better rating if more seating. Plus order quick people want in and out. Some indecisive tourist finds their way in there slow to order wrecks the whole flow .

BEWARE! HUGE HAIR FOUND IN EGG SALAD TODAY I contacted the store by phone and spoke to Anthony who put me on hold for five minutes. He picked up again and then told me that I had to call back tomorrow to speak to the manager a guy named Charlie. I said, hey I just want a new egg salad on bagel without hair. He said I would have to bring the sandwich in with a receipt in order to exchange it. I explained that I couldn't leave my office and walk 5 blocks to exchange a bagel with hair. But if he sent a delivery person over I still had the bagel with the hair, the Murray's bag, and a Murray's coffee cup. I wasn't trying to get a free bagel. I also explained that I was a loyal customer who has been there hundreds of times. He said he couldn't help me. He could have looked me up in their delivery database but didn't bother. Call Charlie tomorrow. Thanks for the advice Anthony. I could deal with hair in my food, but I cant deal with bad customer service. Murray's you lost me, my friends, and everybody at my company for life.

I love that the offered Nutella as a bagel topper! Why don't more bagel stores do this????? The bagels were super fresh and the coffee was a fantastic start to the day. I envy anyone who lives close enough to stop in daily!

On the way to Starbucks, we found Murray's Bagel's across the street. Actually wound up getting Murray's twice! Both times I got the garlic bagel with plain cream cheese. So yummy! Will I be able to find this any where in the Bay Area? My girlfriend had the bagel with white fish. White fish is good! Wish I got that on my garlic bagel! On our second trip, the person that helped us was kind of rude. She was also a bit slow with our order, especially compared to the the other people that work there that seem to be the opposite. BTW... don't bother asking them to toast your bagel. Doesn't exist at Murray's.

  • Sotheara S.

Bagels really are fresh and tasty. However, the seating is uncomfortable, the chairs at least, and the menu is sort of hard to follow. The pricing aspect of it, at least. I went in for a simple bagel and ended up paying around 11 dollars for it. My fault I suppose. Fast service too. Was lucky to go on a day where it wasn't so crowded.

Don't give me this crap that a bagel shouldn't be toasted. TOAST MY FRAKKING BAGEL! Good Everything bagel, not the best I've had in NYC or elsewhere, and definitely NOT TOASTED. Looking for toasty-er and less expensive options in my hood (3 bagels with cream cheese for 8 bucks? I mean, if they're toasted, maybe.)

    (3)
  • Wendy W.

It's kind of uppity that Murray's refuses to toast bagels. But they were right: My bagel was so hot and fresh from the oven, that toasting couldn't have improved it.

The bagels were ok. Cream cheese is good though.

Perhaps it's because I have fallen in love with almost-everything NYC (being from the melting pot that doesn't have a specific cuisine, Los Angeles).. but they sure do know how to make a freaking fantabulous yummerlicious bagel in this hustle-bustle city. I had tried Ess-a-bagel on my last NYC visit.. and LOVE them.. but wanted to try a different places this time, because I love food and it loves me. It sort of loves me, but I still love it more regardless. First thing's first: Murray's does not toast the bagel. And don't ask them to, or you'll get the same dumbfounded look I received.. as if I was not speaking a language known to Earthlings. Second: They only serve breakfast bagels until noon, but they do have hard-boiled eggs as one of their ingredients, so you can go for that. Which is what I did. The "everything" bagel in whole wheat? As Martha Stewart would say, "it's a good thing". I decided on the cream cheese with chives.. and woo boy.. they do not skimp on the cheese, I tell ya! It was like a 2 inch layer of it, oozing out of the center top (very fluffy, yet creamy). I added hard boiled eggs to it because I needed and wanted the morning protein.. and seriously, it was a good combination! Don't make that face. Third: The employees have been told that if they smile, they will be cursed with nightmares of stale, grocery store bagels, running after them like ninjas, in their sleep. Forever. Ok, maybe not, but something close probably. Fourth: If you can catch a seat by the window, it's a lovely way to take in the New York minutes with a smile. Incredibly delicious cream cheese. Very yummy bagels. Awkward service (I asked for water, and she looked at me and then looked away and continued doing what she was. Thirty seconds later, she went to get the water.. Soooo, they are nice (in a doing their job type of way) I'd say, but you won't feel like they are acknowledging you.. and if you wonder if you should ask again in case they may not have heard?.. Don't ask again. They hear you fine and clear).

I cracked a tooth on those stale ass bagels. Don't even bother. Pulling out my tooth in the middle of the restaurant is not one of my favorite memories.

  • Jackie Y.

Bagels are delicious, though they tend to run out of my fave - whole wheat everything. I love to pair it up with scallion cream cheese. Breakfast sandwiches are quite tasty on plain bagels (i.e. pastrami, egg, and cheese or salami, egg, and cheese). They can be quite large - large enough to share! Coffee isn't memorable. Delivery on the weekends, forget it! They've quoted me a 2 hr wait for delivery before. They really need to step up their delivery service. Can't they see the demand? If you must, definitely go in and take it to go...otherwise, be prepared to wait 2 hours for a bagel. Tip: if you buy a dozen bagels you get 1 free.

  • Jessica C.

Delicious! Such perfect bagels-- moist and soft inside, just the slightest bit of crunch on the outside. I love the $1 cinnamon/raisin bagels. Note that they don't toast bagels, but it's not really necessary because of the bagels' consistency. One catch: if you aren't a huge fan of cream cheese but just want a tiny bit, ask them to put it in a container, rather than on the bagel. I had to save my bagel this morning from suffocating under a particularly thick layer of cream cheese. Pros: Deliciously fresh bagels, fast service, low prices. Cons: Not much seating available

  • Laura Y.

Thank you Murray's Bagels, thank you for being located just a few blocks from my school. Good bagels and wonderful spreads-I had a pumpernickel with maple walnut raisin cream cheese. MMmmm. I stuck to the ol' bagel 'n' cream cheese but next time I'll definitely try one of their numerous sandwiches. Great space with enough room to sit down, read a book and enjoy some carbohydrate goodness.

Been to Murrays a bit as of recent since it's convenient, between the C train & work. The bagels are good for what is in the area, outside of that is a different story. Usually just pick up a couple & go. As mentioned in previous posts the staff is fairly rude & really pays no attention to folks in line, skip over people or just seem like youre bothering them in general. Also as mentioned the asian woman always seems pissed / bitchy. The prices are on the pricier side for portions of salads & cream cheeses. The chopped liver is one of the most haggard ones i've ever eaten, or at least tried to. Basically a crap-load of old chopped onions with some liver paste holding it together. I'd give it only a 2.5 as the bagels are good but everything else weighs it down.

  • Jen L.

Came back for twice. Once for a plain bagel w. egg salad. Second for plain bagel with maple raisin walnut cream cheese. Egg salad was a bit bland with just egg and mayo. Needed salt. The bagel was still really good. Third time I went.. sad to say but I've had better sweet cream cheese at Panera. The maple raisin walnut just wasn't cutting it. Very few walnuts. Flavor was masked by too much sweetness. Bagel was eh. Ask for which ones are still hot.

  • Bonnie P.

I always get the everything bagel with jalapeno cream cheese. The bagels are fresh and the cream cheese is by far my favorite ever. The only con is that they put way too much cream cheese on the bagel. I always have to remove 1/2 of it.

  • Maly L.

At Murray's Bagels, you can get a great untoasted bagel with pretty much anything on it. You just better know what you want and how to order it. Otherwise, you'll get a smart ass remark from the workers or dirty glare from the people in line behind you. There's usually a line and usually a wait. And it's usually chaotic. It's like an assembly line behind the counter but they're not happy if you order separately. It's not as if they get paid by the piece. And if they don't feel like making an egg sausage breakfast sandwich, they'll just say they don't have any (although there's a sign promoting the new special) - unless you insist on it. I usually get the #1 Traditional (novia scotia salmon, plain cream cheese, red onions, tomatoes without capers). I usually also have to ask them to go light on the cream cheese or it will turn their untoasted bagel soggy. This was our breakfast-to-go spot during the summers before our roadtrips to the beach. If it wasn't for convenience and a decent bagel, I wouldn't put up with their Nazi service attitudes.

Breakfast culture is huge around here. I have a specific way I order my breakfast everytime: Everything bagel, scooped, double toasted, sausage, egg white, cheese, salt, pepper, ketchup, hot sauce Never had a problem in the tri-state area... NEVER! Until I walked into Murray's after I played basketball at the greenwich school a block away. The guy looks at me and tells me that they don't toast the bagels. Who doesn't toast a bagel? Next the salt, pepper and ketchup I put on myself. Really? After you've already closed it and put it away I have to do unwrap it and do it myself. AMAZING! Then the hot sauce issue. They had none. Add to all this the long wait for the food. I actually felt bad for the young lady standing next to me knowing I smelled like a bucket of used sweat socks after playing 3 hours of basketball in an un-air-conditioned gym in August. Sorry lady, hoped my overall bum crotch smell didn't ruin your breakfast like my chewy non-toasted and dry bagel did mine. I give them 3 stars because if you simply want bagels to bring home and toast yourself, they're really good. If you want a bagel sandwich, go elsewhere.

My multi-grain bagel was perfect. It had a shiny, crunchy crust and a chewy flavourful interior. I had it packed with cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. Fresh and delicious. The hazelnut coffee was good too. The location is quaint and the prices are good. A bit of a wait but the line moved quickly and efficiently. I left very happy.

These bagels are hella wicked sound cool awesome sweet sick amazing great rad good tight excellent nice gnarly awsome fantastic radical crazy hot phat badass mad super brilliant ill insane killer fun nang bad safe dope ace sexy fresh very hip mint pimp fly swicked wow best fab heavy evil chill dude groovy bomb. Yeah, you heard me. My crutch is the garlic bagel with maple-raisin-walnut cream cheese. I could do without the raisins, but THE COMBINATION IS SO DELICIOUS I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CREEPY LITTLE RAISINS IN MY CREAM CHEESE. Have lots of fixins, other sandwiches, pastries and so on. They seat maybe 20 people if you are all sitting like you're an Irish family in steerage on the Titanic. Expected businesslike/gruff guys behind the counter and those little tri-fold white napkins make the experience of my bagel and cream cheese the perfect capper to a running errands-birthday present shopping-wearing sunglasses while wandering the sunny city kind of day. It's homey.

I was visiting NYC and this was my first bagel tasting and it was amazing. I was with my boyfriend and he loved it too. We went back another time on our trip. The bagel had a perfect flavor, and there was more than enough cream cheese. We live in Chicago, and you definitely can't get a bagel like that around here.

"Okay, let's make a bet. How many seeds do you think I have in my teeth?" "Definitely one. What about me?" "Gonna go with four. At least." On your mark, get set, smile. These were the most delicious and seediest, if that's even a word, everything bagels I've ever had. Seeds on both sides, both sides now! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Behold the whole wheat everything bagel. And Murray, I loved every minute and every seed. I know Zagat loves you too but please understand I must remain 5 star loyal to my local village bagel shop, David's.

Great food most times, but really bad service. They have to switch to a better, perhaps to a more automated system of ordering. Right now the guys listen to orders half heartedly often don't wait for you to finish ordering, and even if you can order everything the chances are they will miss a few things.

i'm so lucky that i live in ny... bagels are a girl's best friend... wait, it's suppose to be diamonds...haha well, this bagel is AMAZING... big, crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside... i was torn between being healthy options (multigrain or flaxseed) and my go to (everything)... they had the basics... vegetable, walnut rainsin... too many good things to choose from! i went my oldie but goodie.. everything with vegetable... i couldn't wait so i had some on the way home in the subway... it was so big... i could only finish half but the other half is right by me ready to be eaten once my body finishes digesting the first half... oh, i am a little bit in love...

Amazing bagels. Sometimes gets crazy in here though.

This place is probably the most poorly run establishment in all of NYC. Every time I go in there's maybe 8 or 9 guys behind the counter joking around, wrestling, and pretty much waiting out the clock, regardless of how many people were in line. Last week I went in, one person in front of me, and it took (no joke) 15 minutes to get a bagel with cream cheese. Oh, and that's the other thing: you have to repeat your order at least three times, because they forget by the time they finish talking to their buddy. Worst of all was today when I went in to order the meatloaf sandwhich advertised in their window the Monday special only to be told, "no meatloafs today.". Yeah, this was the last time. The bagels can only be so good.

My doctor's office is down the street from this place, so I always look forward to going here after an appointment. They honestly have the best bagels around! They make all sorts of bagels and cream cheeses from scratch. Everything is soooo fresh and very yummy. I like bagels with cream cheese so I try to get a different kind of bagel everytime with a different kind of cream cheese just so I can try all the varieties. They are usually served warm, but I don't mind if they are room temperature so the cream cheese doesn't melt. Don't ask them to toast it, they won't do it because their answer to that is our bagels are fresh from the oven (don't know that that is always true). The bagels are nice sized and they load the cream cheese on so you really can have one for a meal anytime of day. They're kind of pricey, but you get your money's worth. If you have the opportunity to try this place, you should.

Fast forward: it's Saturday morning. Your head hurts. Your throat is dry. After drinking about a liter of water, you realize that you stomach is grumbling. You want a bagel. You NEEEEED a bagel. You've got to go to Murray's. Nothing fancy about this place - just fresh, crusty bagels, about a dozen different types of cream cheese, and more smoked salmon and meat options than you'd care to contemplate. Friendly, fast service that helps move typically long lines at light speed. It's exactly what you need.

Pretty big yummy bagels. Only thing is the first time I got a bagel here they yelled at me when I asked for it toasted, I didn't know they don't toast. I love their everything bagel with scallion or veggie cream cheese for a carb filled breakfast.

I am a loyal H and H bagel fan but when i read that the Olsens twins fav bagel shop was Murrays, i had to check it out. They have a really neat set up, bc at H and H it is strictly a bagel pick up place, they dont spread cream cheese or put smkoed fish on any of their bagels, they leave that up to u. Murrays is basically a bagel bar. U line up, pick your bagel and your toppings. They have a huge selection of smoked fish, cream cheese, meats, etc. So we went in and just ordered a bagel, our mistake. We ordered the spinach bagel, and the everything bagel. On their own they were a little hard, i think they need to be topped with other ingredients to complete the package.

holy shit these bagels are impressive. and huge. i don't understand how people eat one in one sitting. i could only get thru half of mine and that was trying really, really hard. here's the deal california peeps. they don't toast them. cause they're fresh, you better f'ing appreciate them that way. i was a little skeptical about this, cause i am not a fan of raw bread. but you must trust. these bagels are not overly chewy the way they come from noah's in cali. (does noah's even exist on the east coast or are they just fronting?) and they weren't overly dense either. they were just perfect. so i guess it's true that they say about there being something in the water. anyway, skip the breakfast sandwich one cause the sausage is just weird. and no one needs to eat weird sausage. there's too many other good choices here.

i just finished my whole wheat everything bagel with egg n cheese.....yummmm. its hard to find a good bagel place in the city. Murray's has every bagel & every spread you can think of! & the coffee is pretty good too. yayyy! ps-long lines ooook its now like 2 weeks later, and Murray's isnt as good as I thought. The bagels are pretty hard! Definitely not how I like mine. Bringing Murray's down to 3 stars...sorry lol

Heard great things about these bagels and finally went. Got a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and it was excellent. The hand rolled bagel was fresh with a crispy bottom and nice flavor. Will be going back.

I had my maiden new york "toughen up kid" experience here. One of many during the last two years, but certainly one of the more memorable. The week before I started working, I waltzed into Murray's thinking a bagel and coffee would be an enjoyable morning repast and a classic New York experience. Sauntering up to the counter, I asked the Murray's man to reccomend something to me. I was quickly prompted to order or move on, and so I did. In a panic, my mind seized on the nearest bagel and topping: An everything bagel, with scallion cream cheese. My stars must have been aligned correctly that day because this turned out to be a delectable combo. One star off b/c of the supremely rude treatment on day 1, but it might have just been Toronto emigre adjustment blues. I go back and order the same thing again and again. I'm carbolicious (you need to mentally hear a fergie inspired backdrop to that statement to get the true hilarity therein).

YUM! Delicious bagels and lots of options for different cream cheeses, including a selection of fake cream cheese made from tofu (didn't try those but so nice they have the option!) I really enjoyed their fresh bagels here and will come back next time I'm in NY.

I don't know if I've changed or if Murray's changed. I had a multi-grain bagel and lentil soup here the other day. The bagel was tasteless, no flavor. The soup tasted off. Brooklyn Bagel's multi-grain a few doors down has so much more flavor. But thinking back, that's what I remember about Murray's pumpernickel too. I think, when Murray's was my fav, I liked the texture of Murray's bagels. Now, with Brooklyn Bagel, I can get a bagel with great texture and flavor. But Murray's still takes the top spot for best atmosphere. Brooklyn Bagel has a bland, corporate feel.

Just when I thought there was only one bagel place for me, Murray's Bagels appeared and blew me away. I have never liked a bagel that was untoasted unless it was straight from the oven, but the mark of a truly good bagel is being able to enjoy it at room temperature. Never before have I had an everything bagel with so much, well, everything. The smell pretty much permeated a 20' radius. Despite its huge proportions it, I took the whole thing down in one sitting just because of how delicious it was. The spiced chai was also amazing (likely due to the whole milk thickness and creaminess). The only downside with any good fresh bagel is that it is not as good a day or more old. I took a few back and they got pretty rock solid over the course of two days. But nothing a little toasting couldn't fix. This will be another place I will never fail to miss when in NYC.

Sesame bagel w/ strawberry spread. For something more substantial, go with the everything w/ sundried spread.

A good bagel doesn't need to be toasted--it's that simple. That's why Murray's can always get away with their No-Toast rule (I'm also a fan of the fact that they have such strong convictions about how they serve their food). Definitely the 2nd best bagels in the city (sorry, Ess-a wins). YUM.

    (5)
  • Lilee N.

Organic sesame bagel: rocks my world! delicious all on it's own. chewy on the inside and a fantastic crunch of a crust on the outside-- no toasting required! Now, go back the next day and have it with lox and fresh slices of cucumbers and be prepared to be amazed! WOW. YUM. Friendly staff too!

The Ying to the Brooklyn Bagel Company's Yang. Murray's has a more traditional NYC bagel than it's competitor up the street, with a much harder outer crust and a uniform dense interior. They are very tasty but they are chewy enough to hurt your jaw some times. They also go stale very quickly. It's really a matter of day to day preference whether I'm in the mood for a Murray's or a Brooklyn bagel. They're both good, but very different. Murray's has a more limited selection of cream cheese and doesn't give new options occasionally. Favorites are the maple walnut and the sundried tomato. The lox spread also has plenty of salmon in it. Their 'no toast' matra is a bit annoying. A bagel with butter seems to need toasting. Their coffee is very acidic. Something that most people like, but I do not. That's a sour point for me because coffee is a natural pair for a bagel. The sandwiches at Murray's is where this place really shines. They heap on the toppings making more than a meal. They have many types of salmon to choose from as well. If I want more than just a bagel with cream cheese, Murray's is the best choice in Chelsea.

If you want to tell an out-of-towner where to find an authentic NYC bagel, tell them to go here. It's genuine, genuinely good, and also has a charming atmosphere and patient, helpful staff (unlike some other busy local bagel shops). It's definitely not a tourist trap, though - the breakfast line was full of local people on their way to work. The line moved quickly and efficiently, and I was able to snag a cute marble cafe table, since more people were opting for to-go. I got a pumpernickel bagel with egg salad, a lemon-poppy muffin, a chocolate macaroon, and a coffee. All that meant I was good for both breakfast and lunch! The bagel was big, fresh and flavorful, egg salad was just right, the lemon poppy muffin was a bit heavy but delicious, and the macaroon was perfect. I love macaroons. I'm so sad about the recent popularity of 'macarons,' cause I always think for half a second that they're selling macaroons, but they're not. Murray's has the real deal. Coconut.

I don't know what part of the Murray's experience I like better: eating the bagel or hearing a staffer tell some poor soul who just had the nerve to ask, "we don't toast the bagels!" HA HA HA! Shot down!! Seriously though, these bagels are so delicious, you don't need to toast them. The outside is cracklin' good and the inside is soft and chewy. My favorite flavors are Whole Wheat Everything and Pumpernickel. Plain cream cheese is fine for me, but my S. O. had the egg and bacon sandwich and raved about it. I make a weekly pilgrimage down to Murray's in Chelsea and it's a good thing they aren't next door to me or I would be shaped like a bagel. It's worth the trip!

  • Teresa L.

Fantastic bagels! They even taste good the next day :) The only reason they lose a star is because they put way too much cream cheese for my liking. The cream cheese was a thick as the bagel. Other than this, a thin spread of cream cheese on the bagel would earn itself that extra star. It's doesn't get THAT busy when I go in the morning, but their ordering instructions and process looks to work well and is well structured. If you're in the area, and feel like a little snack, come here for a bagel! There's many different cream cheese flavors too!

Ah a staple in Chelsea. I used frequent this place when I was working in the neighborhood. Their strawberry cream cheese with my bagel was my breakfast norm and Loved their Spiced Chai. I just can't seem to find any place that can make it just as good. One of the best bagel joints in the city.

I recently switched from whole wheat to multi-grain and it has made all the difference! They are amazing and a true NY bagel. The system for getting scrambled eggs on bagels might need a little fine tuning, each person seems to do it a bit differently and sometimes you are left waiting if the person behind the counter doesn't understand what you said.

Pros: yummy bagels, good topping options Cons: usually long lines, they don't toast the bagels, and beware of the veggie tuna

Three points for bagel, one point for fun atmosphere. I'm not a bagel connoisseur by a long shot, but the only difference between bagels here and bagels I've had around Chicago is a much noticeably wider range of contrast between the hard/firm outside and soft inside. That being said, Murray's was a good shop for me- fast efficient service, plenty of bagel options, plenty of spread options. Not the cheapest bagel I've bought, but it was more than enough to fuel me until lunchtime. The atmosphere was enough that I could sit down and enjoy my bagel and coffee amid the hectic serving line. No slouch here, they've earned their credit with me. Oh- the coffee was S.T.R.O.N.G. Like, body builder strong. Holy beejesus, Batman!

Bagel Nirvana. Massive but massively delicious bagels. Good cream cheeses. Lots of variety in all. Lox is elite. Top3 place for it that I've encountered. Chicken salad and whitefish salads very good. Solid enough breakfast sandwiches. Bonus point to make it a clear 5 star'r in how annoyed some people get with not being able to toast. Its a valid enough inclination to occasionally desire a toasted bagel. Not like you should be jailed; just mocked, verbally derided, and blacklisted by the Bagel Union's 'Just Say No To Toasters' division. O'! The one chink in Murray's otherwise distinguished armor: mediocre pastrami. Which is a shame because a sickass hot pastrami on a Murray's bagel has Caligula potential: good to perverse proportions of taste and tastebud pleasure.

  • Pia M.

Oh Murray's... I've ordered you so many times on a hungover weekend morning. If you're an egg salad fan (and I know most people are not), go with their egg salad on a whole wheat scooped bagel.

As a Chicagoan visiting NYC, a good bagel was top of my list and Murray's was a great choice. Chewy, warm fresh bagels smothered in cream cheese, just the way an NYC bagel should be! The lines can be long on a Saturday, but we were lucky to grab a table to sit down. I had the salt bagel with veggie cream cheese, which was delish. My boyfriend had the pastrami sandwich on a bagel, which was also great, some of the best pastrami he's ever had. Definitely will stop here again on an NYC visit.

Top tier, and my second favorite Manhattan bagel next to Absolute. Also the schmear/lox selection is as good as it gets. Try their pastrami salmon on a pumpernickel, it's outstanding. The bagels are actually a little more expensive than most, but it's Chelsea.

Can. I. Just. Seriously, of all my hopes and dreams and expectations of a New York City have come true with Murray's Bagels. I asked a friend for a recommendation upon moving here for some really good bagels. Nothing fancy, just your average with some cream cheese. I walk in and see a glass display of every bagel you can think of. Fresh, delicious, and oh how I savored it. I got the cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese. I forgot to ask for it toasted as my non-NYC life before basically had that as a requirement. I'm glad I forgot because I heard it was "rude" to ask. And I'm glad I forgot but it DOESN'T NEED TO BE TOASTED. It was that amazing of a bagel. I was a little sad I missed the breakfast time just by 30 minutes, but not totally bummed because I know I will be back. Got a pretty awesome cafe au lait to go with it and had a lovely afternoon with my scrumptious bagel and coffee. Note, not a lot of places to sit and as it was pouring rain when I was there, I did not eat outside. However, standing isn't that bad, it's worth it to take in the terrific aroma of this bagel place.

Coming here just makes me sad that there are no good bagel shops back home in Chicago. The lox sandwich and the sesame bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese were both off the hook. We got there at 11am and the line was only about 5 mins. The place was much less hectic than Ess-a-Bagel (my go to NYC bagel place) and we were able to easily grab a seat. Maybe one day there will be something comparable in Chicago...

YUMBOLICIOUS! Wow, I had moved abroad recently and didn't remember how damn good a proper New York bagel is until I stopped by Murray's for the perfect breakfast -- a garlic bagel with the lox of my choice and cream cheese + coffee. A lox+cream cheese bagel is plenty pricey at Murray's -- expect to pay about $10.95, but it is so worth it. The bagel is perfection -- they don't toast it, but somehow it comes to you warm and just perfectly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. And it is giant. I can never decide on which lox to pick (they have a board of about a half dozen choices or so), nor am I any kind of lox connoisseur, but they are generous with lox, which are always thick slices that barely fit into the jam-packed bagel. The cream cheese -- oh what gobs of perfectly whipped creamy goodness!! Note there are also many other kinds you can choose from, including tofu cream cheese. How modern! The jalapeno flavored cream cheese is also not to be missed if you like a little kick (goes nicely when balancing out a salty lox). Like I said -- perfection. Let me not forget the staff -- knowing how popular Murray's is any given morning, the place is well-staffed with plenty of smiling folks ready to make you happy. Background music is noticeably hipster, but I believe it just is whatever comes out of their XM station. PLUS -- FREE WIFI! How much more can one ask for?! And the coffee ain't half bad either. There's the Murray's blend and also Oren's Roast provided. Oh how I crave more!!!

Ran into Murray's today for the first time. I like the idea of being mocked when you ask for your bagel to be toasted if the person doing the mocking is offering a superior bagel which does not require toasting. Somehow a Murray's whole wheat bagel (untoasted) is delicious... no cardboard here. For the folks who scoff at the "toasting request sneer", my best analogy would be that you'd probably get the same reaction if you asked for A1 at Strip House or Smith & Wol

  • Jeffrey K.

The bagels here are still wonderful . . . but it would be nice if the person servicing you at the counter would pick out the bagel you asked for (I asked for garlic and got onion and didn't realize it until I got to my downtown office) -- granted it's only a slight annoyance. The pastrami smoked salmon is quite brilliant, and makes for a great sandwich.

Ugh. Another bagel let down. I didn't go for the spreads/toppings.. Just wanted to try a couple of bagels. Perhaps they were just not fresh, but they were way too hard. And not that real good NY bagel flavor. Still on the hunt......

  • Ishmael V.

Bagels are explodin' with cream cheese! No toastin' allowed, and tons of other options in case you hate schmears. A tad overrated, but when something is a New York staple then it deserves some respect'. As much respect as you give a taxi driver cause he's a native New Yorker. Not much. Lot's of attitude and not much to show for it.

    (3)
  • Dave S.

You people are asking them to TOAST? What are you, meshuggah? Where are you from? Kansas? Look, they're already meeting you nouveau-New Yorkers halfway, with such sacrilege as whole wheat, and tofu (tofu!) spread... but let me tell YOU somethin', buddy -- if you're criticizing them for not toasting, YOU'RE the schmoe who gets one star. This is a New York institution - complaining about a classic bagel served a classic way is like going to Mexico and being upset that the food isn't like Taco Bell! A bagel that needs toasting is a lousy bagel, people... and Murray's bagels are far from lousy! Indeed, they're arguably in the running for some of the best in New York (I like 'em more than H&H, less than Bagel Hole). They're big, they're doughy, they're perfectly boiled with a skin that's firm and flavorful without being tough. Best of all is the amazing selection of schmears and lox -- hey, bet some of you didn't even know there was more than one kind! They're one of the few bagel-serving delis in the city that still has classic belly lox... though some of the newer counter guys have no idea how to properly slice it. Indeed, that's the one weakness here... the service has gone downhill over the past few years, as the staff changed and turnover increased. Thankfully, some have stuck around and have gotten good at what they're doing, so I no longer always have to obsess over how my bagel's being assembled. Other than that, still my bagel of choice on the west side below 34th!

This is a true New York bagel shop. Service is fast, food is fresh. I thought it was weird that they don't toast their bagels, but they honestly don't need toasting- they're that good. Staff is very pleasant and they work fast. I haven't tried the coffee yet but I will. I'm obsessed with their breakfast sandwiches; my favorite being the egg, cheese and sausage. The spinach bagel with roasted red pepper cream cheese is also delish!

Why is it there always such a long line at Murray's?! I thought it was just b/c it was very popular and everyone wanted to get a piece of the action but upon a closer look it's actually b/c they are really f'in slow at getting ppl their orders! This Sunday was the last straw. I waited forever for my egg and cheese on a bagel. The bagel and a bottled water came out to $7 dollars which seemed kinda high but whatever. I was hung over and just needed carbs and protein. I finally get my bagel and ready to stuff my face but wait....WHERE THE HELL IS MY CHEESE?!?!??! Ugh, now I have to get up and deal with the huge ass line and get this corrected. I end up waiting another 5 minutes (does it really take that long to put cheese on a sandwich???) then go back to sit down. Open up the sandwich and find literally 4 or 5 slices of cheese. While appreciate the extra cheese, biting into an inch and a half of cheese is not really that great. 40 minutes waiting + overpriced bagel + messing up my order + hangover = can't deal with this crap. I was going to give them two stars but their bagels are good and I was hung over so I was prob being a bitch b/c of that so I felt 3 stars is fair.

Since Murray's was down the street from Brooklyn Bagels I had to stop by and give these bagels a try as well. Everything bagel with nova lox and scallion cream cheese. The bagel didn't compare to BB's. The texture was off and it wasn't as chewy however they gave a better portion of lox than BB's.

After moving away from New York two years ago, I have yet to find a bagel place as good as Murray's. Onion bagel with low fat cream cheese, red onions, and extra tomatoes was my favorite breakfast. I just wish they used better coffee. The line can get extremely long, but it moves quickly so decide exactly what you want or just might feel some death stares (and yes, i'm talking from personal experience.)

I've had a lot of bagels all around Manhattan, and Murray's is still my favorite. Great bagels, great cream cheeses, friendly staff. The only thing is the line is usually pretty long (it's worth it) and there isn't much seating, but I take mine to go.

Went there based on the recommendation by tour books. Its good! I like how they have so many different types of cream cheeses/spreads/salads available. The bagels are wonderful, I like it so much! Being a fan of non-toasted bagel, it is not a big issue for me that my bagel is not toasted as long as mine is crispy outside and soft inside. They serve breakfast bagel (warm) every morning~ extended to 2pm on Sat/Sun! Yummmmmm I will give this place 5* if they have more selection on their bagels (more flavors) but their garlic bagel is GOOD~! Order everything bagel if you cant decide what you want to get. You'll never be wrong!

This was my first time at Murray's and I was unsurprisingly pleased as I have heard only great things. I had a hard time choosing what I wanted since there are so many bagel and cream cheese options and combinations. I decided on a whole wheat everything bagel and vegetable cream cheese. First things first, this was by far the BEST vegetable cream cheese I have ever had and I recommend it to anyone and everyone even if you don't think it's "your thing." The bagel didn't disappoint either. It was the perfect base to the amazing spread since it was fluffy and perfectly dense inside and a chewy exterior. In my opinion, exactly how a bagel should be. It was flavorful, but not overpowering and the whole wheat version added a heartiness to the cream cheese that mixed deliciously. I decided to go around 9am Saturday morning to beat the crowd I've heard about and it was definitely a good decision since I barely had to wait in line and I was in and out in less than 10min. Service was quick and efficient. If you haven't tried this place yet, it must go on your check list!!

While I am surprised that they don't toast bagels, you have to admire a place that sticks by their rules. While it's a sometimes treat for me, I do like their breakfast coffee + bagel special. I keep meaning to try the other things on the menu, but I have yet to expand from the round rolls of yummy goodness. With the demise of H&H this has become my favorite place in the city.

  • Bill S.

The coffee and the Bagels are right up there with the best of them! The line moves pretty fast during a Sunday morning rush (from the other side of the counter, but tourists can sometimes slow it down gawking or speaking Japanese, German or any nationality in town) The bagels have great favors and there is a righteous selection of multi grains...they put a hefty schmeer of cheese, butter or spreads on each bagel, so watch out if your faint of heart or concerned about squeezing through the door on your way out. Kuddos for the WiFi, good tasty coffee and no wait staff atmosphere !

After getting an amazing bagel at the Murray's on 6th Ave last week, I decided to give this 8th Ave location a try. There were only a few people on line, and it was 9am on a Wednesday. Most of the seats were taken. Pretty tranquil compared to the packed 6th Ave store I went to on a Saturday afternoon. I got two sesame bagels: one with maple walnut cream cheese, and one with nothing on it, for a bagel quality-check. Now, maybe it was a bad day, a bad batch. Maybe they got mine mixed up with the bagels they were giving to City Harvest. But compared to the bagel I got at their 6th Ave shop a few days earlier, these bagels weren't great. Better than a bodega or DD bagels, sure, but not bagel heaven. They were too hard on the outside, and just didn't seem fresh. I don't want to have to use my teeth to tear through a bagel; it should be softer. But that's just my opinion; maybe they want to make bagels with hard skins? I'm willing to give them another shot, but when I go somewhere to pay $3.50 for a bagel (with flavored cream cheese), I need to know the quality is consistent.

I just don't understand the hype about this place. I asked for a toasted bagel and the response i got was..."we don't toast bagels because they are fresh..."

These bagels are laced with something. Illegal or not, I don't care because they're DELISH.

Murray Bagels at 8th & 23rd are a Chelsea institution and w good reason - OMG! Been coming here for 8 yes now when I am in NYC, dreaming of my piled high egg/cheese/bacon cinnamon raisin bagel...heaven on a plate. Add the side of truly heavenly handmade cream cheese w raisin and walnuts and I am dreaming of my next breakfast there tomorrow - ambrosia bagels made for the gods & share w us mortals. The staff is equally delightful - a true rarity in NYC. Amazing food w a smile and so worthwhile

Great selection, very generous with lox. But it's a bit pricey and there are very few places to sit. But all in all, great place to grab breakfast

  • Brittany D.

I absolutely LOVE Murray's Bagels! The bagels are always fresh and the cream cheese is so flavorful. I recommend the spinach bagel with jalapeno cream cheese or the sesame bagel with lox spread. You can't go wrong with Murray's! The only thing I am not hugest fan about is that they don't toast their bagels; however, it doesn't really take away from it.

  • Annette V.

Hallelujah! My problems with scooped out bagels are solved. Murray's now had a wonderful little creation called "flatz" in whole-wheat and whole-wheat everything. Once you get past the absurd name, you will find that these thinner bagels are delicious and perfect for people, such as myself, who think there is too much going on in the original Murray's bagels (you know, the bagels that are roughly the size of your head). I recommend the nova spread on the whole-wheat everything and the maple-raisin-walnut on the whole-wheat.

  • Chad H.

The bagels here are decent enough but the fact that they don't toast bagels is super lame. I mean bagels are still good untoasted but they're like 10x better when they are toasted. It's just a fact of life. It's why man invented toasting... to make things taste better. And the fact that they have such an attitude about it is just stupid. I would recommend that Murray's join the rest of us in the 21st century, make a quick trip to Target, and buy a $15 toaster. 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.

  • K E.

Great bagels- no doubt about that. But wow, everything here is so pricey. If you want anything beyond a bagel and cream cheese the bill starts adding up at lightning speed. My main beef with this place is that they won't toast the bagels. "Our bagels don't NEED to be toasted," is what they say to me. Hey Murray's- Don't tell me how to eat my bagel!!!

    (3)
  • Marcia P.

I was surprised to read all the complaints about Murray's "not toasting" bagels. I had no idea. I've been eating bagels ever since I could eat solid foods and I never toast them. Unless I have to because they just came out of my freezer. Or maybe if I'm stuck with some icky hotel-chain-breakfast bagel that's shiny and white I might ... but I'd probably choose a gluey blueberry muffin instead Anyway, I'd have to say these are my favorite NYC bagels. They're firm and toothsome, not sweet (like H + H), lots of grainy types available. My personal favorites are the multigrain and whole wheat everything. The cream cheese choices are good, and the lowfat is very acceptable. We often get the "tradition" bagel sandwich and take it on the road. It's a perfect combo of creamy, salty, tomato-y, crunchy [bagel, cream cheese, smoked salmon, red onion, capers and tomato). A great last NYC meal before embarking on a road or plane trip ... just don't breathe on anybody.

first of all, the reason for the 2 star rating is for the customer service (which is 0 stars) and not the food (5 stars). the bagels, sandwiches, cream cheese are delicious!! which is the only reason i continue to go. the customer service is beyond horrible - the people that work there act is if you should be honored to be in their store. it takes them forever to give you the time of day - there can be 10 guys working and a huge line waiting and they will stand there and talk and basically ignore you until they feel bothered to take an order. i don't know if they do it so that their line is always long so customers will think it must be worth the wait or what the deal is. i am never rude, in fact, i am always super nice, yet i cannot get a nice response from anyone in there. i will continue to go to go there because of the food but beware the rudeness of the staff.

  • Andrew M.

I used to be a fan but lately have almost completely stopped going. While the bagels are decent, they're nothing amazing. But what really made me stop going was the service. Despite a pretty large staff they are SO SLOW even for the simplest of orders. It makes stopping in for a quick bagel and coffee on the way to work impossible not matter how early I am.

  • Preethi C.

Cute bagel shop with a decent amount of seating. People are usually rushing out in the morning so there's plenty of seating during breakfast-time. Murray's has a very wide selection of spreads and cream cheeses, including vegan Tofu cream cheese. The jalapeno cream cheese is my favorite but it's super spicy so watch out! There's also a wide selection of meats, cheeses, and other toppings. Service is fast and friendly & the prices are decent. This is definintely one of my preferred spots for picking up a quick breakfast sandwich.

  • B. T.

I am a fan of this NYC chain. They make very excellent bagels, but the high rating is based at least as much on the great stuff they offer to put on them: A variety of cream cheeses from "regular" to low fat (and many with "shmears" mixed in) and 6 or 7 kinds of salmon from the basic Nova Scotia to Norwegian and wild Pacific varieties. I'd love to explore the salmon varieties but the basic Nova is so good--with basic cream cheese, some Bermuda onion and capers on an onion bagel--that that is what I get every time. This place is usually packed and getting a seat to eat in can be tough. Get yours to go if you have somewhere to eat it.

  • Tina P.

They do not toast! Just don't embarrass yourself. Bagels are chewy & fresh inside with the right amount of crisp on the outside. Breakfast sandwich was yummy. As was whole grain everything with scallion cream cheese.

  • Daniel R.

Just had the most disgusting corned beef sandwich of my life. Mouth full of beef fat on dry stale bread. Better to stick with bagels while at a bagel shop, I guess. My bad.

    (1)
  • Alex R.

Big, beautiful, crusty, chewy... ummm I couldnt wait for the sandwich, just got half dozen bagels and a small tub of scallion cream cheese to go. The "healthy bagel" was yummy and stood up to my eager toaster. I had my own norwegian smoked salmon at home, and topped off the scallion cream cheese very nicely. You want boiled, fresh, crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside (bubbles of air trapped inside even) bagels? , can't go wrong with Murray's !

    (4)
  • Paul M.

I really did not like their bagels. Feels like you're chewing a piece of rubber. It gives you jaw some really good exercise. Not much flavor either.

A true Chelsea gem! I love this place, why it holds a special place in my heart I may never really know... maybe its the delicious New York bagels, or the variety or cream cheeses, or maybe just maybe its the amazing sandwiches they make. I loooove sandwiches on bagels, therefore it only makes sense that I'd love Murray's. Back home in NH we had this place called Breger's Bagels and I loved that place more than almost any other sandwich place and now that I'm in NYC Murray's is their exact equivalent. There's almost always a line, but with their large staff behind the counter it goes fast, the prices can't be beat, and the staff is just so freakin' nice. They have many "Murray style" sandwiches but I choose to "create my own" and it never lets me down, I leave pleasantly stuffed and happier than ever! Whether it's breakfast or lunch Murray's Bagels is always an option!

Rating a bagel bakery in New York City is dangerous. Everyone has not merely a favorite, but KNOWS which is the BEST. Murray, Tal, H&H, Brooklyn Bagels..... Thankfully, virtually all of them are real bagels, prepared in the traditional manner (boiling plus baking). This situation deteriorates sharply the further you get from New York City, alas. A great bagel has a tough chewy exterior, and a soft chewy interior, and a bagel flavor. And you can't count on a great bagel remaining a great bagel for more than a few hours after baking. My favorite was hands down TAL until I discovered Murray's. The long lines weekend mornings suggest a strong following. Murray's refuses to toast your bagel - on principle. It is just out of the oven! You don't destroy this work of art and passion by taking actions designed to make a stale bagel seem a bit more fresh. Great selection of cheeses, fish, etc are an added bonus. And they make that long line MOVE with a large well strained staff.

NEVER AGAIN! Ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. Got 3 bites in then almost choked on a huge whitefish bone. It was somehow baked into my bagel and there was another one in the cream cheese. All they did was hand me a free water bottle, and refused to refund me my money. They have good bagels and it all tasted great, but clearly they are not careful with the food.

  • Gabe W.

I could make this short... Tina Turner wrote a song about Murray's Bagels, it's called Simply the Best, you may have heard of it, it was sort of a big deal, just like this place. Or I could draw this review out... and talk about how perfect these bagels are. You want it toasted, go somewhere else, a bagel shouldn't have to be toasted. You want to be a snob and talk poorly about a place with a rich history and respects the culture of bagels, you're and idiot. An untoasted bagels is where it's at, and now with my love for Jalapeños, I gotta say that personal perfection is a multi grain bagel, fresh off the press, with low-fat Jalapeño cream cheese. What I like about the multi grain bagel is that it has a lot more flavor than a plain bagel, but without smothering it with burnt garlic to add that flavor, although I do like an everything bagel every now and then. A few things that they do well here, fresh juices, or at least they taste fresh (must be the quality of the oranges) and service, I have never not gotten what I ordered and have never had a problem with being ignored or talked to in a nasty manner (all of those who order a toasted bagel, totally deserve what's coming to them). A couple hints, and I'm totally trying to be as douchey as I can be, don't order a toasted bagel MORON. Also, if you are out of town and have never had a bagel before, don't ask where the one with sprinkles or chocolate creme is, DOUBLE MORON. Lastly, if you have never had a bialy, this is not a bad place to get them, not awesome, but perfectly acceptable as a substitute if you can't make it to a real polish ashkenazi deli/bakery.

Awesome bagel place in Chelsea. Forgot how we came across this place, but I think it was mentioned on some food show. This place offers freshly made bagels that aren't toasted but are still chewy and crunchy at the same time. Had an everything bagel with cream cheese and scallions. It was SO amazing! Had to get another one before heading back to LA. Will def have to go back and get my bagel with shmear again!

  • Christopher C.

Pretty good bagels, I will say I was disappointed that they had no egg or egg everything. One of the sammy had lox, I know it's pricey but $11.00 for a few slices of lox on a bagel?

    (3)
  • Erin D.

So delicious...fresh off the red-eye from LA, straight to Murray's. I'm a bagel fanatic, and this is the bee's knees!

    (5)
  • Ignacio V.

Their bagel with everything is delicious especially when you order it as a sandwich! I had a bagel with cream cheese, locks of salmon, tomatoes, onion, lettuce and the bagel sandwich was perfection. One think that I like about NY Bagels were how stiff they are, that's how I love my Bagels, my coworker said that the water in NY is different from CA, which explains why they don't come out the same! Whatever the reason, NY beats LA when it comes to bagels, hard core! The only draw back is the price, $10 for sandwich can get expensive after a while. I thought it was expensive, even by NYC standards, had the same sandwich somewhere else in the area, and it was much cheaper. But totally worth the stop for lunch, brunch or dinner if you're in the area!

I used to LOOOOVE Murray's Bagels. They serve La Colombe coffee. (Awesome.) They have nommy bagels (Sweet.) There is comfortable seating and good people watching (Go Chelsea.) So what could possibly be wrong ? Why two stars? So they don't toast bagels? Fine. I can deal with that. So there is often a long line, and a sense of chaos that doesn't seem necessary? Welcome to New York. So the last three times I have been there, what appeared in my bag was not what I had ordered? Meh. Should have checked the bag before leaving. It's loud in there. Cut the counter folk some slack. No. The real reason for the two stars and the time taken out of my life to write this review? $4.30 for a bagel with easy peanut butter. Let me repeat that. Take bagel. Cut in half. Sloppily apply 2 Tbsp of peanut butter. Charge $4.30. Cashier shrugs at you when you are incredulous. (Oh, and while you're at it, smear that peanut butter on the wrong kind of bagel just as the final spit in the eye.) Really, Murray's? REALLY????? Unless this policy of price gouging changes, I will never step inside of Murray's again.

No...There are better bagels in NYC. Does not have the necessary consistency...hard on the outside with a chewy inside. I go to Ess-a Bagel for all my bagel needs.

I know that bagels are a big deal in New York and I really wanted to experience one of New York's finest. I read amazing reviews about the freshness of Murray's etc. and I am pretty bummed out about what I got. I got a cinnamon raisin with plain cream cheese ( personally i prefer my bagels toasted, but am ok with it this way too). The bagel itself was tough and didnt have much flavor and there was just too much cream cheese for my liking. I just don't get the hype

Holy crap the sable special with scallion cream cheese, capers, tomato and onion = heaven. Pricey but so good.

Okay I believe it now. I was once in an 30 minute argument over whether New York bagels are any better than bagels anywhere else. Me: Bagels are bagels are bagels. Toast em up, and they are a great way to eat some cream cheese. Him: You must not have had a New York bagel. Me: I've had bagels in New York. Same crap I got back in the bakery of my grocery store in Texas. Him: You have not had a New York bagel. Me: Whatever. I take it all back. These bagels WERE different. And BETTER! They didn't need toasting...and were so yummy and soft inside. OH, and I Love Love Love the olive cream cheese! When my girlfriends were in town, their delivery made great hangover food.

had a doctor bring this in as a treat one day and was told that they were absolutely the best bagels in NY and they definitely are! had the pumpernickel and the tofu veggie cream cheese. definitely something else

Not all bagels are created equal, and after visiting Murray's the morning I arrived in Manhattan I finally understood what my sister had been raving about for all these months. They have a full selection of fresh bagels, lox, and spreads like Nutella, Peanut Butter, Chive Cream Cheese, Jalapeno Cream Cheese, and Plain Old Cream Cheese. I was surprised that they don't toast their bagels, rather they are served warm. I was surprised just how great they were. Watch out though, a bagel with lox and cream cheese can set you back about $8 and that's not including your coffee!

    (4)

Good stuff here...have a hard time eating bagels that aren't toasted. Even without the toasting, they were dee-lish! Now if they could only teach 'em how in SF...

Great coffee/appetizers so tempting they're impossible to resist/a real New York City standout - the authentic experience - and its always hard to get a seat which tells you how great it really is. The BEST pastrami!

15 minutes in New York and this was our first stop. After a red-eye, we just needed a quick bite before exploring the big city. I guess it was obvious it was our first time there. The guy working behind the counter asked where we were from and gave us samples of cream cheese. Another employee gave us suggestions on where to hang out and offered to show us around. How sweet! I thought New Yorkers were supposed to be rude? Nice people. Nice bagels.

    (5)
  • Richard G.

Yup. The real deal. The bagels are HUGE. In retrospect I would definetely share one as they are almost too big, especially with a smear - more like a 1/2 pound of topping. Really good bagels and huge selection of toppings. Go here.

    (4)
  • nicole h.

Hands down one of the best bagel shops in nyc. They dont toast their bagels, which can be a little annoying, but considering they are always fresh and delicious, you wont find the need for it to be toasted.

  • Robert M.

I'm always impressed with line management. Efficiency. That "Can Do" New York 'tude. Faced every weekend with an intimidating morning rush of bagel-crazed New Yorkers, the staff at Murray's always steps it up, making sure everyone on the rapidly moving line gets exactly what they want. No easy task, especially since the combinations are endless --- poppyseed with lox, whole wheat with low-fat veggie spread, raisin with strawberry cream cheese, and on and on. Big-time kudos to Murray's dedicated pros. And big-time props for a delicious lineup of treats, including my personal favorite: tomato, basil and mozzarella on a sesame seed bad boy. Snag a table and browse the Times. You'll be in a New York state of mind in no time.

  • Cameron M.

I love Murray's bagels. It's hectic and noisy but they make some of the best bagels in the city. However, I refuse to give in to their almost religious offense to bagel toasting. Besides the time it takes, what's so wrong with a little heat on some sliced bagel? I've heard all of the arguments, but I don't buy it. Warm and fresh or not, a toasted bagel is a toasted bagel, and until they change their minds, I'll suck it up, buy their bagels, and eat them at home (toasted, of course).

I rate Murray's bagels as some of the best in the city and I am a huge bagel snob. They're perfectly crusty and chewy and yummy. I also love the selection of cream cheese. And though I haven't had it in awhile, last I remember their tuna salad (and I'm not a fan of tuna salad) is really good, especially in a scooped out bagel. Yum yum.

  • Jared M.

ate here twice on a recent visit to NY...some complain of the "no toasting" policy but honestly it's not even missed. great bagel (onion) with tons of smoked fish and cream cheese options (went with jalapeno). somewhat pricey [$7 for a bagel/spread and a bottled drink] but worth the stop.

  • Mark C.

Okay, let me lay this out for you. The wait time BEFORE you place your order is ridiculous. By the time you get to the counter though, you have plenty of time to figure out what you want as your second or third choice because they're likely out of the bagel you originally wanted. Now let's say you order an egg sandwich and they don't feel like taking down your name, they have someone in the back take their sweet time cooking up your eggs, then they take it and place it on a counter somewhere in the back and let all the sandwiches pile up until someone in the front takes the time to take them all and sort them out for the waiting customers. Oh wait - there's no names on any of them, what are they going to do now? No worries, they'll just stand there and unwrap every sandwich to see what's on it and then call out the orders that way. Their system leaves a LOT to be desired. This place is also twice as expensive as any other breakfast spot around. I won't even bother ranting about the fact that they won't toast their bagels. I don't know what it is though, but something keeps bringing me 1 subway stop out of my way at least once a week to get breakfast. Go figure.

Finally! After hearing about this place constantly, we decided to try it out today. Sadly, I felt the experience was a bit anti-climatic (maybe our expectations were too high). Yes, they have chewy bagels. Yes, you can almost have anything on god's earth on your bagel. But, the price was a bit steep and the salmon salad was way too salty. Coffee was only okay as well. Go to Murray's, at least once, for the experience, but don't ask them to toast your bagel. They will laugh at you, I guarantee it.

  • Lin C.

Much like pizza, there is nothing like a New York bagel. Nothing compares, really. I heard that Murray's doesn't toast their bagels because they are just that good-- well, they are. Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and delicious. Fresh, and both times I went, my bagels were still warm. I've only had the lox cream cheese spread and it was AMAZING. They have a pretty big selection of wacky cream cheeses-- I'll be back to try more. Minus one star for the extremely rude employee that took my order the first time I went. She was slow, rude, and literally threw my bagel at me-- not even exaggerating-- it almost fell off the counter onto the floor. She really seemed like she did not want to be there. Hopefully she no longer is.

I've tried a lot of bagels in this city. I love bagels. And this one rocks my world. In particular, the bagel called the "health bagel" which has all these yummy seeds on it, and is organic. It doesn't get any better than that. Me and my hubby are particular fans of the tofu veggie spread (sooo creamy), the strawberry creamcheese, and the nova scotia. Don't turn this place down because they don't toast. Honestly, their bagels don't need it. They're fresh fresh fresh. And delicious. I like them better than H&H.

  • Ben F.

Murray's is one of the places I think of whenever planning a trip to NYC! The bagels are classic and amazing. Try the pumpernickel bagel with tofu cream cheese! The egg sandwich is also a great way to get started in the morning.

  • Kristen K.

Murray's is as good as it gets. I do not understand how the world does not flock to the whole wheat everything with tofu cream cheese every day. The coffee is yummy the staff is great (The staff does want to keep the line moving but as a New Yorker you know that is how this town works - I don't blame the staff). I think the atmosphere is wonderful. And believe it or not the best time to go is at night. You get the place to yourself to sit back and enjoy the best bagel in town.

  • Eric P.

This is a cute place for a coffee and a bagel - it just the guy behind the counter was a little grumpy. Oh, and for some reason, I've always had fun reading the fliers that people post in places like this. Ya know, the ones that offer piano lessons, French lessons, housecleaning services, escorts (j/k) and the like. When I go, I usually get the raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese - mmm. magically delicious! The atmosphere is great. Clean, marble counter tops, marble caf tables, and a big window looking towards 8th Avenue. Oh, and this place ALWAYS has a Village Voice rack. A great place to chill out - and its walking distance from where I work!

  • Billy Y.

This place is disappointing. They claim to serve meat until 2PM on Sundays, but when you arrive prior to that time they have already stopped serving meat. The staff was completely unhelpful in that sense and unwilling to consider my order. If they want to close the grill early that is fine, but don't advertise that the grill closes at 2PM when it closes prior to that.

I was in Manhattan last February, staying at the Chelsea and was lucky enough to have a Murray's bagel nearly every morning along with a wonderful hot latte. :) First of all, I'm a Californian so I probably don't know bagels that well, but I am a foodie, so I hope that makes up for it. These bagels are SO GOOD, I can't praise them enough. They are so chewy and fabulous I could eat one every morning for the rest of my life and be very happy.

  • Ishtar Y.

wow this place was so disorganized. i had no idea where the line started and ended. anyways , i was kind of surpised when they said they didnt toast the bagels here! i was like what the hell??? i want a bagel that warms my hands and melts my cream cheese you bastards! but then i had the bagel and i could understand why.... its really fresh and doughy... hehe...... according to my friend who lives right next to this place, sometimes the bagels are kind of bad, but we came at the time when they just made them.. so i guess alot of it is about timing as is the case for any kind of baked good. but yea the people watching here is awesome. you could sit here for hours just looking at all the interesting lovely people.

    (4)
  • Amanda E.

Really good bagels. No toaster. But as long as they're fresh, they don't really need to be toasted. They have regular, light and tofu cream cheeses. If you're getting a large order, do yourself a favor and place it in advance so you don't have to wait for them to prep.

    (4)
  • Julie M.

Good coffee, but mediocre bagel. Then again, if you're a fan of kind of tough and chewy dough, then you might like it more than I did. They refuse to toast the bagels, which could have saved it, but they insisted that their bagels are too fresh to toast... A decent breakfast, but my 9am's prefer a better bagel without the jaw workout.

    (3)
  • Becky W.

goood bagels, real soft - but it's nothing I can't find at some made-on-premises Brooklyn bagel shops either (there's a real awesome one in Starrett City). I suppose for city dwellers, it's Brooklyn's equivalent. Service was okay, and I got everything quickly. Then again I went at an awkward time, around 1:30. Probably wouldn't go again though considering it's kinda pricey compared to an equivalent bagel in Brooklyn.

  • Shane L.

I have been eating here weekday mornings for about a month straight. You know it must be good if someone can do that. If you can't get to Ess-A bagel, hit Murray's. They know what they are doing. You might even catch a glance of the man himself like I did this morning!

    (4)
  • Matt M.

Great bagels, bad service. Often long lines, they've "forgotten" phone orders several times, and I think my pricing was haphazard a few times.

  • Anita C.

I can't believe I've lived in this neighborhood for a year and only recently came here. The bagels here are so good, I ate an everything bagel with tuna salad then followed it up with a pumpernickel bagel with chicken salad. Yeah, I'm a pig. What. What I like most is the consistency of the bagels, kinda crunchy on the outside and really chewy and soft on the inside. Before I came here my favorite NYC bagel place was H&H on the UES, but I won't have to schlep all the way up there anymore! Can't wait to go back and try their whitefish salad. Yummmm ...

I spent a summer in New York and discovered Murray's Bagels. Quite outstanding. The texture of their bagels is excellent and the cream cheese is also very good. I would skip their coffee though.

Good bagels and a large selection of sandwich meats and spreads. Kinda overpriced, though, considering bagels are just baked dough.

  • Caroline E.

Great bagels, AWFUL delivery service. It is currently 11:00 am I am still waiting on my order of 2 egg sandwiches and a soup that I placed at 9:15. Not to mention, when I called for an update on my order, I was hung up on, placed on hold for THIRTY (in total) minutes and was talked to in a rude tone. All I wanted was a delicious bacon eggwhite and cheese to start my morning off and they couldn't do that for me. I'm still waiting.

    (1)
  • Lindsay R.

I am convinced these are everything a New York bagel should be--crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and in no way leaden or mealy. No, you can't be wishy-washy when you're ordering, but at least here the food is worth the momentary sense of panic. Try the kalamata olive cream cheese.

I had a pretty fab wheat bagel with strawberry cream cheese that sent me reeling. Mysteriously, the price came out to $3. huh? two bucks for cream cheese? This is the only thing you need to prep for a trip with the boys to the beach. Okay, fine, and an iced coffee. I long for such a bagel joint on my walk to work, but alas, Lincoln Center is lacking. Yea, the "no toasting" is a thing, just not my thing.

I think their bagels are just a tad too doughy and fat. I'd much rather have a thinner and less doughy bagel. The salt bagel had way too much salt! so much that we had to scrape the salt off! the everything bagel is delicious as is the poppy seed and practically all of the ones i tried. they had a variety of cream cheeses but i didn't try them since im plain cream cheese and a ton of lox type of girl.

i take away a star b/c they don't have blueberry bagels but *shrug* whaddyagonnado i can smell the bagels from a block away - my sister loves the smoked salmon cream cheese.... i prefer the veggie. the bagels are as big as your face: crusty exterior soft & chewy interior. the poppy seed bagels are COVERED in the little buggers that are inevitably going to get stuck in your teeth. i recommend the fesh squeezed orange or grapefruit juice.

Loved this bagel place!!!! If you are a salmon/lox fan like me, this is the perfect place for you! There are like 13 different kinds to choose from. Can't wait until morning to try it again!!

all the staples are staples and are wonderful. expanded my palate and tried the 'whole wheat everything bagel'. what a delight. perfect and not tough, which i feared it would be. excellent cream cheese, too. still not h&h, but the delightful rustic wooden interior is something that h&h lacks so this wins sometimes. and i'm proud they don't toast their bagels because a toasted fresh bagel is a bullshit bagel.

First off, it's probably a bit unfair for a non-New Yorker to review any New York bagel shop. Murray's has a great reputation and many even think it's the best in the city. During a recent visit I noticed that there was a Murray's not far from my hotel in Chelsea, so my family and I went over for the quintessential New York breakfast. The Chelsea location is small enough to make for a very convivial setting. Only a dozen or so customers can sit at the half dozen tables. Still, no one seems to mind and, in fact, everyone's pretty accommodating when it comes to making room to squeeze in. If you like your bagels on the dense and chewy side, you'll love Murray's. I thought my organic whole wheat bagel was good but the scallion cream cheese was the real standout. My wife and daughters opted for plain bagels with jalepeno cream cheese and were similarly impressed (with the cream cheese). As a lover of lighter bagels I'll probably try elsewhere on my next visit but this isn't a dig at Murray's as much as personal preference.

Here is another Best Of NY: I've tried a lot of bagels, and the ones here are....you guessed it...the best. They wont toast them for you ... try the maple cream cheese and also try the everything bagel. its hard deciding what to get there are too many wonderful options.

Okay, I have a ritual when I come to visit. On my last day, my last morning, I go here to pick up a dozen to carry on the plane with me so that I can have some back home in San Francisco for a week or two. Delicious! If you eat here, you'll get a ton of spread on your bagel so it's a messy endeavor. Not for first dates!

Love this place. Best place in Chelsea to grab a bagel... they have so many healthy options too... if you are into tofu cream cheeses and stuff. Great sandwiches too! Service is always quick and to the point. I like that.

Murray's Bagels are tasty and excellent, especially the everything bagel; too bad thats all the restaurant has going for it. I have never witnessed such incompetence by a group of people as I did when I looked behind the Murray's counter. Staff members frantically running back and forth without purpose (obviously illustrated by our ridiculously long 7 minute wait for 2 bagels with cream cheese and lox). This was compounded by a surly cashier who rudely scoffed at my girlfriend when she asked for a chai tea with low fat mlk. Her replacement at the task was unable to perform basic arithmatic. Worst of all, the bill for two bagels (lox and cream cheese), an orange juice, small coffee, and a small cup of fruit came to $35. Ridiculous prices, horrible staff, save the grief and go somewhere else.

The closest to crack a bagel has ever become for me. I love Murray's. I love the cream cheeses. I love the tofu salads. I realize they're a bit pricey, but I actually (for once) think these bagels are worth it. Soft on the inside, chewy on the outside, and packed with flavor. Mmmmmmmmmm...

  • The Q.

this may have been the best everything bagel i've ever had. i was a little dismayed when they said that they have a no toasting policy (which seems ridiculous for a bagel store), since i like my cream cheese to be warm and melty, but honestly it didn't even matter because the bagel was just that good. super thick and chewy and delicious. they have a good drink selection too.

  • Ian R.

I haven't had a bagel better than Murray's; they're fresh, and chewy (in the good way), flavorful, quintessential ny bagel. I like a sesame bagel with their zesty veggie cream cheese-yum! Also just had their cinnamon-raisin with their walnut cream cheese--mmmmmm. And boy do they slather on the smear!

  • Katie G.

I don't understand the hype. The bagels are simply average, at best. The fact that they don't toast is disappointing and nonsensical. I've experienced a range of customer service depending on the time of day that I go. When it's busy, don't expect good service. Don't even expect them to get your order right. The one redeeming quality of Murrays, and the only reason I go there any more, is their spiced chai lattes. To die for. Otherwise, if a bagel is what you're looking for do yourself a favor and head north a few blocks to Brooklyn Bagels.

  • chris m.

By all means not the best and nowhere close to be frank. Fast service which is always a plus considering the slow service of many food establishments. On the other hand, Murray's is extremely crowded. decent bagels, but nothin' to shake a stick at,

A bagel place that doesn't toast their bagels for you? What the heck? Because of this fact I now take my lunch break at Brooklyn Bagels a couple blocks down the street.

When I'm in New York, one of my favorite things to do is tell people that I prefer Montreal Bagels. This line is simple, yet it works every time. It's kind of like telling a Bostonian that consumer reports, in a blind taste test, found that MacDonalds coffee is preferred 2/1 over Dunkin' Donuts. People just don't appreciate that kind of information. Anyway, like it or not, bagels in Montreal are the best I've ever had. Check it: fairmountbagel.com/eng/i… But Murray's bagels are very very good.

Ok, so they are really good bagels. It's also nice that this place is close to Penn Station, so it's convenient when you're buying bagels for the family before you take the train out of NYC. Their cream cheese (I had strawberry) is the best I've had in New York. Almost buttery in flavor. I still think that Absolute Bagels beats them out, so Absolute remains my only five star bagel location. Reasonable prices--I remember it being around $10 for a dozen bagels.

I love this place! Great variety of bagels and spreads. The health bagel is by far the best! So dense and delicious and makes you feel great afterwards.

  • Alvin W.

Hands down the best bagel I have had. They are large in size, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They use a good amount of cream cheese but since the cream cheese is whipped it not to overpowering. You can eat one bagel with getting full before finishing. At other bagel place one bagel will still leave you hungry.

This place doesn't look like much, but the bagels are amazing. I didn't get mine toasted and I usually do, but I'm so glad I didn't. It didn't need it! I worked at a bagel store for years, so I am totally picky but this place makes the cut. Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was a HUGE bagel, fresh, and SO TASTY! I don't know what they put in there but it was just soooo good. I give it four stars because this place doesn't look as good as it could inside, so the experience is ALL about the food!

This review is for their corporate accounts/catering service: Every Friday my company gets a huge platter o' bagels and fruit basket from Murray's delivered to each floor of our building. Overall the quality of the bagels is pretty high - the outsides are definitely crisp and the insides are fluffy. I bet they would taste scrumptious hot out of the oven at the store, but for now I've only eaten the room temp freebies from the office. Highlights: great onion, pumpernickel and poppy seed bagels, amazing scallion cream cheese, and richly decadent maple raisin cream cheese! The major problem, however, comes from their lack of consistency. At times I've had bagels literally hard as my wood desk. Sometimes they seem suspiciously like the leftovers from the night before... and they are even worse when it comes to the fruit baskets. Some weeks we get a great variety of fresh picked fruit, other times its completely green bananas, apples covered in bruises and mushy, sour grapes. So points for taste and cream cheese flavors, but they need to improve consistency to be as good as Ess-a-bagel or Daniel's.

Long Lines at lunch time No seating anytime But the bagels and coffee are great Plus, if the coffee line is too long, you can just go next door to Cosi But why would anyone care what I think?

Cool ambiance (good music playing, not too crowded, cool metal ceiling finishing) and lots of stuff on the menu I wanted. A little overhyped though. My pumpernickel bagel w/ scallion cream cheese was great, but not the best. The nova was tasty, but did not rise to the level of Barney Greengrass.

  • Jan N.

The bagels are OK, the service is barely tolerable. I am not sure that anyone in the place really cares and after just one visit, I am not sure that I do either. My onion bagel with veggie cream cheese wasn't memorable and what is the deal with no toasting? Enough people on the pages of YELP are asking for it, scores of other customers or ex-customers are likely asking too. Are we asking too much?

    (2)
  • Jordan L.

I want to like Murray's but I just can't; I have simply never had a good experience here. The service is terrible, the staff is rude, and the orders are often messed up, especially when it comes to coffee drinks. The bagels, although Murray's doesn't toast (which I absolutely hate!) are actually pretty good, so if you're willing to wait in a long line and deal with bad service, it may be worth your while. Otherwise, try Brooklyn Bagel up the street.

This place is the best place to have freshly made bagels compare to any other place ( Bklyn, Queens, Bronx, Etc...) that I know. They have a great selection of cream cheese. My favorite is the sun dry tomatos.....yummy. There is no need to ask for a toasted bagel, the bagels are still warm and soft when you bite into the bagel. Be prepare to wait in line for these fresh bagels made on premise.

The Uptown crowd has their H&H (which I do love), and us Downtowners have Murray's. If you just said, "who?" -- shame on you! :) Murray's Bagels, with it's W. Village and Chelsea locations (6th Ave/teens & 8th Ave/20s), is a bagel-lovers dream and a must try. Schmear scallion cream cheese on your everything, peanut butter on your cinnamon, or yummy tuna on your poppy. With a wide selection of freshly made bagels in metal baskets, and a glass counter replete with toppings, you'll be munching on a winning combination in no time (yes, they're fast)! Watching a regular, I learned about "scooping". No, not "spooning" -- "scooping". That's where you have some of your bagel's guts -- i.e. bread-ness -- scooped out to give more room for your topping. It has the ancillary (primary?) benefit of being more Atkins-friendly, I guess. Makes me feel cool to say, "I'd like a sesame bagel scooped with Tuna." Try it. Grab yourself a half dozen bagels on your way out -- you never know when the craving will hit for a nice round one. And you must must must try the chocolate rugalach. 5 Yelp stars. Make your Jewish mother happy. I'm going to Murray's...

Just after lunch, i suddenly wanted to try bagel.. oh, yeah~ i have big belly... =( actually, I love Bagel a lot.. it's cheap and tender... toasted bagel w/ butter on it... what a perfect match! but not this time.. whole wheat everything w/ cream cheeeeese.. ah~ I love garlic and onion smell.. don't close to me people!! it's mine! I'd better to take a seat before ordering... no seating available.. oooops... they need more tables and seating area... at least chairs please.. some guys w/ laptop.. very unusual.. (didn't know there's free wifi) well, couldn't have bagel at that time... brought home and ate it.. OK... it's good.. but better eat at that moment.. have to go back, take a seat, and eat it!!

There's nothing here that's not good. They have a lot of options for people trying to do the healthier side, too -- multigrain, whole wheat, etc, and all are fresh and delicious. An awesome lunch spot though that is fractionally cheaper than anything else you'll find in Chelsea, and uncomparably delicious.

    (4)
  • William C.

yummy goodness right here. gotta love the garlic bagel. they put loads of cream cheese in the bagels, which is so utterly decadent but man does it taste good. i flat out have not had a better bagel, but then again, i'm not a huge bagel fan either. i really dig the tomato and fresh mozzarella in the bagel too, although it's $5.50 instead, which is quite a bit pricier than $2.95 for cream cheese in the bagel. the line moves quick, you can dart in and out in a couple of minutes. good deal.

good shit. awesome bagels but they don't believe in toasting them. not sure what that is about but I guess it is an east coast thing? didn't matter cause they bagels were great. The coffee kinda sucked but I guess i am used to good coffee. It made my stomach feel funny all day. There is a Choux Factory, sorry i got the name wrong, a place that is run by these Japanese people that specialize in cream puffs on 23rd. The place is half a block away from Murray's and they got Kona coffee. Bomb shit. check it

If you're in a bind and need refined carbs with cream cheese fast - I guess Murray's would be your place. They don't toast bagels (I am not sure if that's a chain thing or just an individual restaurant thing). My order (grain bagel with plain cream cheese) was unceremoniously thrown together with a huge glob of bland cream cheese parked surreptitiously on my bagel. I love a bagel that has been pampered a little - toasted, schmeared nicely, wrapped pleasantly. But my pipe dream of a good NYC bagel was dashed when I had my first tastes. But, in the end - I was full for $1.75.

Amazing and tasty food but expensive for a sandwich joint--egads, I paid $5 for a small soup at what is more or less a take-away joint! Nevertheless, other than breaking the bank, this place gets my vote b/c the food rules! Both Tony and I got sandwiches and were both impressed. I got the pastrami, which I will say is wayyyyyy above average! In fact, some of the best I've had in the city! I had mine served on a wheat wrap (which was amazing), but I had food envy when I saw other folks w/ loaded pastrami on a bagel. NOM! I'll definitely be back, but next time I will just get a sandwich and get my drink and chips (or soup) somewhere else. =)

After years of frequenting David's Bagels or Tompkins Sq. Bagels in East Village, it came to my realization that I needed to find a closer bagel place (aka a bagel place I could easily access if say, I had a bit much to drink the previous night). Being in denial for months about needing said new bagel place, I finally made my way over to Murray's bagels one slow-moving Sunday morning. Oy vey. The place was fairly crowded, but the lines moved fast, so the wait wasn't unbearable. I went with my go-to order: whole wheat everything with scallion cream cheese. I received my order pretty speedily and with a smile, so that was pretty good. The texture of the bagel was just right: the crust had good chew, and the insides were soft and fluffy. Heh, fluffy. They're also pretty sizable bagels, so you likely won't go hungry with these babies. They have a vast selection of meats and fish, many of the salted, cured, or smoked variety. Looking at other customers' sandwiches, I saw that they really pile the meats, condiments and toppings in the sandwiches. So yeah, you'll likely be paying $10-12 for a bagel sandwich, but you'll be getting a whole load of meat. Also, if you're a fan of the flagel (flat bagel, or "flatz" as they call it at Murray's), they have a pretty good selection of those as well. Overall, prices are on the higher side, but again the portions are decent, so at least the value is there. I'll be back, since it's relatively close by and I can lumber in on a weekend morning. I prefer the space and speed of the nearby Brooklyn Bagels, but as BB doesn't have Seamless, I'm more inclined to go to Murray's in the case I'm feeling "under the weather" or just plain antisocial.

I ordered a plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese today from Murray's. Opened my bag to find my bagel had been sliced so that the top had slid away from the bottom and cream cheese was everywhere. There are worse problems, so I messily pieced it back together and took a bite... WHAT IN THE WHAT?? The cream cheese had a distinct "meat" flavor. I thought maybe I was imagining it, so I took another bite. Nope, definitely meat. Not sure if they were using the same spreader as something with meat - or if meat got accidentally mixed in - but nothing is grosser than strawberry meat cream cheese. I hope that you never have to judge this for yourself. I immediately threw away my $4.08 (not including tip) bagel and will not be returning.

Its good to show out-of-towners a decent NY Bagel. It is debatable if Murray's Bagel is representative of a good NY Bagel. I've bought a dozen Murray's Bagels to bring to friends in PA. That batch was had a decent crust, soft innards and was great with delicious thick cream cheese. I've also tried Murray's with salmon and capers and corned beef and mustard. The fillings were perfect but the bagel was hard, crusty, and tasted overcooked. A relative told me 6 times in one tasting how ridiculously hard these bagels were. Hmm. Thanks Murray's.

Murray's are my 3rd fave bagels in NYC. If they were owned by Indians, they'd be Curry's Bagels. If they were owned by Starlight, they'd be Furry's Bagels. And if they were my #1, then they'd change their name to Hurray's Bagels. However, there are no prizes for finishing 3rd, although you do get a bronze medal. Bronze is not a very New York colour though, is it. I mean it's more synonymous with Los Angeles, Miami, perhaps Texas and definitely the Jersey Shore. Speaking of which, if she is J-Woww, then these bagels are Bay-Woww. Oh that was so bad. What to get: Everything Bagel with Olive Cream Cheese (or any fancy Cream Cheese). What else: This is one of the best 5 Bagels in NYC, and in the country. And what else: Some people call me the space cowboy. Some people call me Murray-ice. (Wolf Whistle) Bill Murray and Andy Murray co-share this place, hence "Murrays." If your mother is in town, I hope you Fed-her-here (Roger that), and if you just had a baby, then enjoy this bagel as a Post-Nadal treat. So the best Bagel in NYC is a toss up between Brooklyn Bagel (I like the Queens location better), and Ess A Bagel (my fave on 1st closed down but they're still on 3rd). Murray's is up there with Baker's Dozen (Greenpoint), not too far behind in joint 3rd. And since NYC bagels are by far, by a mile, by a long stretch the best in the country, that makes Murray's the 3rd best in the country. If you wanna get "Murrayed" I recommend doing what Britney did and eloping to Vegas. These bagels are so beautiful you could definitely use one as a wedding ring. So all that remains is for you to ask someone "Will You Murray Me?" I, for one, definitely would not turn that down. I don't think any bagels outside USA compare to the NYC ones either. Even that one in East London, on Brick Lane, as good as it is, doesn't really make a Harvey Dent in the top 5 list because of the NYC places. Maybe it could be high up on the "best of the rest" list but nothing more. If you see Phil Collins here trying to woo someone, remind him that "You Can't Murray Love." I've been here about 5 times, including once with my brother and his wife. They naturally loved it as much as I did. Naturally. My bro and I tend to have similar tastes in food. Also I've brought girlfriends here and they adored it too. So it's actually owned by Murray Curie and Murray Antoinette. Also Murray Osmond and Murray Magdalen. As well as Murray, mother of Jesus (some Hispanic dude I think). Murray Osmond thinks the bagels should be served with grits (she's a little bit country), whereas Murray Antoinette says that when they run out of bagels, instead of baking more, they should let customers eat cake. F***ing weird owners, right? Oh and, some general bagel info. The reason NYC bagels are so good, especially here, is that the dough is so soft and fresh and perfect and heavenly. The outside is so tasty and well-formed, not crusty but not too rock hard... just perfection. The "everything" actually tastes like everything, and is amazing. And the cream cheeses really seal the deal. I can't describe the cream cheeses here - they are too good. And I am not a cream cheese person. They are divine. They are from heaven. And there is an enormous selection, fresh made daily. You simply must come and try them for yourself. And speaking of Jesus, did you know the three wise men brought him Golden baked bagels, Frankenstein (to read, when he gets older), and Myrrhays Bagels. At Murray's, I usually get an insanely good olive cream cheese on a divine everything bagel. I have no idea how this place can not be a five star place but it's a crime that its average is lower than 4 on Yelp. I cannot possibly recommend Murray's any more highly. Speaking of Murrays, as you know Bill Murray is co-owner. Manhattan may be full of "ghosts" of bagels past, but you'll "buster" nut when you taste these amazing bagels. You'll come back every single day and order the same thing, it'll feel like Groundhog Day. Maybe these jokes are a bit Lost In Translation. Just get yourself down to Murraysrise Kingdom. OK, I'm done.

Scottie Pippen. Burger King. Your younger (or older) sibling. It ain't easy being the second banana (copyright Grantland), and sometimes that's enough to make sure I never go to a restaurant again. Just two blocks away from Brooklyn Bagel, there's no reason to come here. Sure, I gave it the old "new to the neighborhood" try a few weeks ago, and it's better than fine. In fact, in any other city, this place is the number one bagel store by far and puts everyone else to shame. But here? Skip it, and walk the extra two blocks. Also you can't toast your bagel. To quote Albert Einstein, "let me toast my bagel if I want." Can't argue with that.

  • Oliver J.

I thought this place was legit. You can tell that they have a brand and aren't as authentic as they might have been ten years ago, but come'on they make great fresh bagels. I had an everything bagel with regular cream cheese and another with veggie cream cheese. Both were fantastic and came to under $8 together. It's not cheap, but what more can you ask for? Saturday morning line didn't even take too long (5 min)!

If you want a traditional bagel with schmear this is a good place to start. There are a ton if choices of bagels and cream cheeses to pick from. You can add the lox if you want as well. The best part is, they aren't skimpy with anything. If you want an everything with sun dried tomato cream cheese that thing is going to be packed. There isn't a huge amount if seating but I was able to find some counter space to hang out at while I ate. Unfortunately I have limited New York bagel experience but this is a great no frills place to have breakfast.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! LOX BAGEL & COFFEE. Quick and efficient service with good food, and a clean place. I'll definitely be coming back again for breakfast. ENJOY!

They're on Seamless and Delivery, which makes it that much more convenient when I'm on the go. I place an order online, and voila! Their online menu consists of chips, brownies, coffees, and by-the-lb spreads and meats. So, you can mix and match all you want. They are just a street or two away from Brooklyn Bagels, another one of my local favorites, but I just always prefer going to Brooklyn, since their lines seems to go a little bit quicker. Their seating space is limited, contrary to that of Brooklyn Bagels, which makes it difficult for me to want to go to Murray's. But, their bagels are equally as delicious.

  • Margaret M.

I'm rating Murray's as five stars solely for taste and quality of product. I had the traditional and also got an everything bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese - perfection. At Murray's, bagels don't need to be toasted because they're so fresh! The bagels each had a super crisp crust and warm, soft interior. Their selection is top notch. I will note that the line is pretty long and they could probably create a better system for ordering. The staff actually forgot to give my friend one of his bagel orders, but he enjoyed the bagel sandwich he did receive.

  • Gab G.

Decent tasting, huge sandwiches. I had the Chelsea club (chicken salad, lettuce, tomato, cheese and bacon) on whole grain and it definitely hit the spot. The cheese wasn't the freshest but the sandwich was overall good. Extremely friendly service is a plus!

  • Angie I.

Charming little bagel place in Chelsea. Great coffee, fresh bagels. The sandwiches are amazing! Get there early, this place gets packed, especially on the weekend. Cozy sitting area, but we didn't have any trouble finding seats. $20 for two bagel sandwiches and two coffees. For the quality and service you will find here, it's well worth it!

    (5)
  • Caitlin C.

I don't really get the appeal of this place. It's always packed, and it feels like an ordeal and a burden to the staff to get your order placed. The bagels aren't particularly remarkable compared to other lauded spots in town- and I can't say it feels worth the effort. Plus no toasting possible.

    (2)
  • Jonathan E.

I got to say, the bagels here are quite delicious. The issues I have are: - They don't believe in toasting their bagels - They don't make breakfast sandwiches after a certain hour. I wasn't too happy to find out they don't serve awesome breakfast sandwiches boo.

  • Amanda C.

While I am not a bagel fan and can probably count on one hand how many I eat in a year, I popped into Murray's with co-workers for a quick breakfast. The joke in NYC is that a purist bagel experience does not include toasting it. My co-worker ahead of me in line attempted to ask jokingly for a toasted bagel and was promptly shut down. Ha, gotta love East Coast attitude! I had a simple egg white on a plain bagel, nothing fancy. Prompt, efficient service is what you stop in here for, not the experience, which is a-ok with me when in a rush.

  • Melissa L.

This is one of my go-to stops during each visit to NYC. In my search of a decent bagel with lox, I found Murray's a few years ago and never left. The lines are long, the sandwiches are pricey, the bagels are stuffed full and portions are huge. There are quite a few options on the lox. Yes, I asked about each one of them. I told the guy behind the counter what I was looking for and he very patiently explained the differences to me. There are also many options on the cream cheese. Not, I didn't ask about each, as I didn't want to incur the irritation of this employee as well as the anger of those in line behind me! The bagels are fresh and just the way I like them - chewy with a slightly crisp crust. Definitely not a hockey puck nor a soft roll (hello Noah's!). As others have mentioned, they don't toast their bagels, which is fine by me as I think they are great as is. Some times I eat half the sandwich and save the other half for later in the day. Other times I eat the entire thing and wont be hungry for hours (actually, most of the day). What I like to do is to grab a sandwich and a beverage and head a few blocks over to Madison Square Park to enjoy the meal, listen to live music and people watch. Yes, service can be cranky, but I never found them to be rude. They just wanted to move the line. You gotta know what you want! A few tables are available for seating inside. There is a bench outside as well.

What can I say? I'm a Cali girl who's never had a true NYC bagel until Murray's. I ordered the Traditional with capers, lox, cream cheese (lots of it -- they don't skimp like they do in SF!) and a tomato (brilliant addition) on a sesame bagel. I can safely say it was the best bagel I've ever had. I had a few recs from friends about which bagel shop was the best. Opted for Murray's based on the cute signage and packaging (I'm a sucker for good branding). So glad I did -- I'll be dreaming about the bagel I had here for years to come. Till next time, NYC.

I am so happy to have had my first NYC bagel experience here. I ordered the Norwegian salmon with cream cheese on the health bagel, and it was a great combo. The coffee was delicious too. I will for sure go back :).

This place is so confident of its product all other elements of business has been ignored. They make the best bagel New Yorkers are craving for. On weekend brunch time, expect the long line along the narrow display area where orders are taken. The store is jam packed with all the seatings are taken inside, outside of the store. Ordering counter is so high you have to stretch your ankle and wait for the sandwich maker to attend you. You have to shout your order due to many people are shouting simultaneously. With all these chaos I love their bagel! -- especially bagel with scallion / lox cream cheese bagel. "Everything Bagel" is very healthful with many different fresh grains.

Great bagels and a nice selection of tasty cream cheeses and other toppings. However, at the prices Murray's charges the shop ought to be impeccable, and yet I do have a few gripes which cause it to lose one star, and a problem with the delivery which cause it to lose another. However, if Yelp allowed it, I would probably only subtract a half star for the minor qualms with the shop, so let's call this a 3.5 star review for all intents and purposes. Shop: The shop itself always seems to be a bit messy. Cleaning and wiping down the few tables they have more regularly would go a long way in my book. No one likes eating at a dirty table. Additionally, the "no-toasting" rule irks me. These otherwise minor issues usually wouldn't lead me to cut a star, but because they charge Chelsea prices, I expect a certain level of standards they don't reach (albeit barely). Delivery: The delivery is slow, unfortunately; my roommate's grilled cheese was ice cold and needed to be reheated by the time it finally arrived. Initial delivery time on Seamless was 60-75 minutes however when I called someone from the shop told me that it would be only 15-20 minutes. It ultimately took about 80 minutes, which isn't too far off from the inital 60-75 minute estimate, but is pretty aggravating given my conversation with the employee. All of the above withstanding, I've always found the food delicious, and will still come back when I'm yearning for a great bagel in the area.

I got the traditional on a whole wheat bagel, it was delicious. The iced caramel late was also very good and all the workers were very nice. Only thing I didn't like was that they didn't toast your bagel which to me is a big deal so that's where they are laking to get up to 5 stars

'Eh, this place was a mess. I just wanted a bagel with some eggs, sausage and cheese. We waited a long time, and then they said they called my name awhile ago. And then a few minutes later, they called my name again. For the first order, they gave me a different bagel with bacon, and for the second order they gave me no meat (even though my receipt had all the correct ingredients listed on there!). Yay I got an extra bagel, but 'eh. After taking an operations management class haha, they really need to fix their process and remove their bottlenecks! The cashier was making up prices too, it seems (she'd say a price and then charge me a different amount, which I see has happened to someone else here!). As for the taste, it was just ok.

No toasting of the bagels. What kind of bagel place doesn't toast their bagel?! I was disappointed, especially with all the raves and how Murray's even made its appearance in Orange Is the New Black. I thought Murray's would be just as good as Ess-a or Brooklyn. Even their latte was just so so. If you like chewy bagels, here you go. But there are definitely way better bagel places in the city.

I usually get take-out at Murray's. Today I had breakfast in-house and could barely have a conversation with my friend. The music was turned up very loudly and we both got headaches and the conversation did not go anywhere. I stood up and had to ask the manager to turn the music down and they did. Any New Yorker will know this: we fight hard for a decent quality of life. At the risk of sounding old (I'm 38) annoyances like noise are like a daily assault on my life, from someone's cell phone ringing loudly in a public place to car alarms blaring and music in restaurants. I've almost gotten used to the first two, having realized that thanks to the complete degradation of parenthood there's a growing number of people in our mist who are incompetent, thoughtless and often a combination of the two--but music in restaurants is something I've never gotten over. I think there's no better indication in the world of a restaurant manager's lack of experience and civilization than when they blast their dining-room with music. I think lack of civilization is important especially. Restaurant managers who insist on playing music in their restaurant are ignoring one very important aspect of the dining experience: the fraternizing pleasure of a meal shared together. By assaulting customers with music, restaurant owners and managers give all other restaurateurs a bad name--they rob diners of a good dining experience and belittle their own reputation by diverting one's attention from the very food they serve. On the other hand, playing music (en sourdine, ie, at a barely audible volume), greatly complements the dining experience and is welcome. I had the pleasure of dining at an upscale Thai restaurant in Chelsea (and no, I don't mean the Nooches or the Room Services) and, in addition to a pleasurable meal I noticed how the play of light and sound enhanced the experience perfectly. The restaurant was not too dark (each table bore a candle) and the music was audible but barely, the trip-hoppy basslines caressing us while we feasted on sriracha noodles and tom-yum. And I won't say that these restaurants don't exist abundantly in New York. I suppose I just need to do a better job at finding them. But really, people, with the money we're paying for rent, do we want to hear some bonehead's Led Zeppelin playlist blasting at us while enjoying a bagel with a shmear?

My husband and I are long-time Murray bagel lovers. So it was very disappointng to order corned beef on a bagel and get a pile of stringy, thick, fatty meat. I threw the sandwich out and called them to let them know that the sandwich was unacceptable,.I would have brought it back, but was no longer in the neighborhood. The man who answered argued with me, insisting that they didn't have corned beef and hung up on me. By all means, get a bagel...hold the corned beef.

I was shocked that they didn't have the means to toast my bagel here. What's a bagel if it doesn't have that perfect crunchy/soft consistency? They claimed their bagels were still warm, but I wasn't that impressed. The environment was really chill, but I need my bagel toasted!

only been here once, but it was sooo good. jalapeno cream cheese with actual big chunks of peppers not just those pathetic teensy little flakes i see in most places on a super soft everything bagel. kick ass. wish they toasted bagels, but thats just cuz i like a solid crunch factor. my friend's salmon bagel whatsit looked awesome, and i don't even eat salmon. prices are a little high, but i expect most bagels that dont come out of a deli to be. plus they have orangina and martinelli's and fizzy lizzy! i'm biased towards fizzy lizzys

Awesome bagels. We got a few to go, big fluffy bagels the way they ought to be. However, my inner Jew (as opposed to my outer Jew, I suppose) is confused. How can there be kosher bagels in a place that makes bacon and ham sandwiches? And shrimp salad (ah ha, see, I know my laws of kashrut...whether I follow them is a TOTALLY different ballgame). So this means either they hired a crooked rabbi, or the bagels get cooked elsewhere and brought here. Either way means one star off, but the bagels are quite yummy. The cream cheese selection is quite enormous too, always nice to have a choice!

When I used to work in Chelsea I would come here for lunch at least twice a week. A great variety of soft/chewy bagels it's hard to just pick one. They have some of the best bagels in the city. When ever I visit my friends who moved away from NYC they always request bagels from Murray's. WARNING: If you like your bagels toasted you'll have to take them home. They don't toast bagels here.

i've been craving bagels for the last week and finally got to satisfying my craving today. i got a whole wheat everything with cream cheese fresh squeezed oj. i know they don't toast the bagels so i didn't even ask and just hoped that my bagel would be warm (or at least moderately fresh). but it wasn't warm and it didn't seem all that fresh since that would mean that the insides are still soft and chewy. my bagel was just cold and the cream cheese didn't adhere at all. really chewy (and not in a good way). i've had way better. maybe i was just really unlucky... the oj was fine. the service was very nice though so yay for that. next time i'll ask about which bagels just came out of the oven and try again.

Best bagels in all of nyc. They don't toast them, but usually they are hot from the oven so this isn't a problem. Highly recommend the multigrain bagel with the sundried tomato and roasted garlic cream cheese...tastes like heaven. Getting a seat there is sometimes tough, but its only a short walk away to Madison Square Park so take the bagel to go.

Large selection of bagels. Even larger selection of cream cheese -- you can get tofu lox spread if you wanted to! The bagels are chewy and tasty, but they put WAY too much cream cheese on the bagels, and don't even think of asking for the bagels toasted. Regardless, a great place to get a perfect NY bagel.

I love Murray's. When I used to work in the area, my coworkers and I always ordered from Murrays - in fact, we used to have "Murrays Fridays." Such nice guys who work there too. But I do agree with Irene - I've always wondered about the whole kosher thing at Murrays myself.

Mmmmmm. Pretty classic when it comes to the standard bagel/deli fare. And I'm a tough judge, being a Jew from Miami Beach - where Delis and Bagels are a religion with followers in numbers only second to New York. But this place certainly gets the job done. My lox was fresh, my wheat everything bagel (!), was delish, and don't even get me started on the Rugelah. Would love to go back and try their bagel sandwiches.

i don't care that you won't toast my bagel, you tempermental bagel artists. great selection of lox- almost intimidating in its specificity, but it only encourages you to explore new things. yummy array of flavored cream cheeses and most excellent white fish salad, ideally served on everything bagel with tomato and onion.

I first heard about Murray's from the Travel Channel and being a bagel lover had to try and find a location while in town. Somehow, by coincidence I came across their Chelsea location while walking down 8th Ave with a friend and had to stop in. The young guy behind the counter gave me my first ever N.Y. attitude (ok, the attitude that you see portrayed on TV not in real life). When I told him that I wanted to order a sandwich he just sneered at me and said nothing. I went ahead and ordered the sandwich but kept an eye on him to make sure he wouldn't spit on my sandwich (he looked the type). Luckily, the sandwich (chicken salad on a sesame bagel) came out and it was.........worth it!!! This was probably one of the best bagelwichs and largest I've ever had. Now I see why it was named the best in NY by the Travel Channel. Even though it wasn't fresh from the oven nor toasted, the bagel was wonderfully crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy inside (unlike Ess-A-Bagel which has lost that feature). I'll definitely try it again the next time I'm in town, just maybe not at this location.

This is why I moved here. It's impossible to get a decent bagel on the West Coast. (The way you can't get a decent burrito in the East!) This is a damn good bagel shop -- good coffee, quick lines, just enough tables for a short wait, gobs of cream cheese. I even forgive the "no toasted" rule. As the only real bagel joint in Chelsea, they don't have to be this good. Oy, I'm kvelling, is this delish!

I've had bagels all over the country but murrays chewy and flavorful rounds top em all. what i like about the place is you dont have to do anything fancy with your bagel--they dont even bake any of those "gourmet" styles like asiago or pesto, with the outlier being spinach (havent tried it). while i am a fan of these flavors at other bagel shops, there is true satisfaction to be found in murray's version of the classics, poppyseed, onion, salt, wheat, pumpernickel, etc. the major variety is in the cream cheese, which features mixes from fresh sundried tomato/garlic to nova scotia, but the quality is everywhere. you can for sure tell that these bagels are made the old fashioned way; first boiled, then baked. also, extra points in my book for its ny deli style set up which also offers white fish right off the bone, assorted salads, pasteries and bread. last time i was there i had an everything bagel sandwich with kalamata olive cream cheese for under $4

very tasty bagels. a bit pricey, but tasty. it does annoy me a bit that they don't toast, but i'm picky about having a cooldown period between the toasting and the creamcheesing, so as to avoid a melty mess. i can't very well ask the guy to let my bagel sit there for a few minutes, so i guess its just as well they give me no choice in the matter, and i avoid the whole awkward situation. very good cream cheese, but really bad coffee. i've given it like 5 chances, and even went out on a limb and tried a latte or something. don't waste your money on the baked goods either, i paid about $4 for some little square that was good, but not $4 good. my boyfriend just informed me that this is coming off as more of a two star review, so i guess this review is just for the bagels and cream cheese. specifically the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and tomato. they more than deserve four stars.

when i used to work in chelsea, i used to hate walking from 8th ave to 10th (yeah yeah it's only 2 crosstown blocks but i had just moved here from a town where i drove everywhere). but after i discovered murray's bagels just off the 8th ave CE stop, i was no longer angry little asian girl. whole wheat bagels with strawberry cream cheese was my thrice-weekly treat, sometimes i'd get multi-grain but my teeth just couldn't handle that sometimes. i didn't even mind that they don't toast the bagels. sometimes if you get in at the right time, you can get the bagels right when they pull them out of the oven and they're nice and warm. mm! yes, the lines can be long but as long as the people in line are regulars and not tourists, it moves fairly quickly. ALSO - make sure you treat yourself to a POM tea (peach flavor) once in awhile.. yes, they are about $4 but they're delicious. YUM! after i moved, i started taking the bus up and down 9th & 10th aves and didn't really have an excuse to go to 8th.. until i got my intern hooked and she voluntarily did bagel runs 2-3 times a week! :D oh murray's, how i miss thee.

This place has great bagels. I had some company coming into town and thought I would stop and pick some up for them and some cream cheese options. I was pleasantly surprised to see they carried some "healthy" options as well as some unique bagels and cream cheeses. The whole wheat everything bagel is very good, as is the cinnamon raisin. As far as the cream cheese go, I would go with the jalapeno, the reduced fat veggie, or the strawberry. Happy to have found a good bagel shop near my house. Thanks for reading and enjoy.

Last january when I was in NYC the lines were way up to the street, this time I could dig in right away. I took a nice fluffy poppyseed bagel with creamcheese and perfectly smoked salmon... yum!!! #Foodporn The only downside; Don't you hate it when people are talking in a foreign language, look at you and start laughing?! That's totally rude, especially doing that to your customers.

Murray's Bagels curiously carries the exact same bagels (including "Health" and "Wholesome Wheat Everything") and a few sandwiches (such as the identically named "'What Am I?" Chopped Liver Salad Sandwich) as Zucker's Bagels & Smoked Fish, so I'm wondering who's outsourcing... They also sell the exact same pastries from Emily's Baked Goods. -Wheat Everything bagel ($1.25 + tax). Tasted similar to Zucker's, though Zucker's was better and fresher. Incredibly onion-y, so guaranteed to odiferously permeate everything on your person. Need to request if you want it sliced. -Bagel Sandwich (Veggie cream cheese on Everything bagel) ($4.09): Perfect Veggie cream cheese!! So good. -Cinnamon Raisin Bagel w/ Cinnamon Raisin Cream Cheese: SO GOOD! The cream cheeses cost 3x as much as the bagels, but they give you a lot. (Thanks to the friendly dude behind the counter for the rec!) I think this would make the perfect cake frosting - savory and sweet, but not saccharine! -Chocolate Chip Cookie by Emily's Baked Goods ($2.50 + tax): Meh. -Brownie Bite ($1 + tax): This initially rang up $1.50, so I had to point out the sign to the cashier. A little crumbly, but surprisingly melt-y upon first bite. Still "meh" though. Considering I can get the same goods from Zucker's at an equal price (and at a 20% Happy Hour discount Mon.-Fri.), I'd rather just go there. Plus Zucker's will honor requests to toast bagels, unlike Murray's, which (proudly) states on their menu that they will not. Zucker's is also cleaner (it's newer), items are more neatly arranged, and it has a nicer ambiance that's less old school.

Another fine NY bagel but my one true love, Essa Bagel, is still the mack. That being said Murray's is a fine example of the genus and you'd never be sad about scarfing one of these guys down on the way to work.

There are two foods woefully lacking in excellence in Manhattan: Bagels and pizza. Brooklyn has the monopoly on those two important NYC food groups. However, there are three reasons to go to Murray's Bagels: 1) Best bagels in Manhattan, 2) Incredible smoked fish, 3) Watching tourists and transplants throw tempter tantrums because Murray's will absolutely NOT toast your bagel. A truly well-made bagel does not need it---so save your hot bread comfort food needs for Mommy's house.

Service was terrible. Took forever to get a bagel and cream cheese. When I asked the counter if they had my order, they accosted me and claimed to have called my number several times. Food was over priced. Bagel was incredibly over rated and kind of stale even. Not impressed. Never coming back. You're better off getting a bagel from the grocery store instead of this $5 non-sense.

having tried brooklyn bagel company on the next block, i felt it is only fair to check murray's out i was kinda disappointed, it wasn't even close to really good, it was just meh i was looking forward to the fabled bagel that was so perfect that it justified the joint's policy of never toasting their bagels so my assessment is that it's all hoopla...i've had far more tasty bagels outside of nyc my lesson learned, a bagel should just be a humble bagel made by the owner of the store busting himself to keep his customers coming back

I was walking to the Apple Store at 14th street and saw this place. My friend told me that the bagel in New York is different from those elsewhere and this place seemed very popular with many people going in and out so I decided to get one bagel. I just had a substantial brunch so I only ordered a bagel with peanut butter. The bagel itself is fine, maybe worth 3 stars but the bagels of the couple sitting next to me smelt really good so I am giving 4 stars now. I think next time I should come in with my stomach empty and have some real breakfast/brunch there.

I specifically sought out this place as one of the great 'cheap eats' in the city but I was really disappointed by my choice. The low fat tuna salad was terrible. It did not even taste like tuna and I threw most of it out. Also, the tomatoes, which cost $.25 extra had the rinds on them! I ended up only eating the bagel, which was great.

the bagel: we got the onion bagel (my fav), lox, red onions, tomato, (no capers). love. best bagel ever. why? the bagel itself is uh-mazing! i dont know what it is. it's fresh. great texture (i dont think fluffy is the right word...a cloud of heaven?). i normally like my bagels toasted but (i) they dont toast their bagels and (ii) its so fresh, you dont need it toasted. mind blown. ugh. how did i live without you? notes: they have lots of different bagels but now that i have the perfect combo, i dont know how i eat anything else. they also have tons of different cream cheeses. go cray. SERVICE: fast. you get in and get out. ATMOSPHERE: small. limited seating. you are surrounded by lots and lots of bagels and cream cheese. OVERALL: this is my favorite bagel. ever. we have been to this location in chelsea and the one in greenwich village (made us hooked). i do have to say that the bagel at the greenwich bagel was a little more loaded (aka more cream cheese, more lox, more onions!)...and they cut it in half for us there. so i think if i had to choose between the two locations, i would choose the greenwich village one but again, best bagel we have had. los angeles has nothing compared to new york bagels.

Overrated. I asked for a salami sandwich on a plain bagel with a little bit of mustard. The bagel had clearly been sitting out all day because it was as hard as a rock. Salami you can't really screw up. However, it would have been nice to have some sandwich with my mustard. Because the bagel was erring towards stale, whenever I took a bite, the mustard of course got all over the place. The service wasn't so impressive either. The guy who took my order seemed liked he'd rather be somewhere else. The girls who work the register were asking people, "What you having?" How about "will that be all?" Not going back ever.

Murray's is great and I go back whenever I'm in New York, the bagels are dense and delicious and they have a great array of cream cheeses and smoked fish. Bagel sandwiches with both hot breakfast meats and deli meats with salad are fantastic. They don't score higher because the lines are often terrible and the staff can be rude. I've given up ordering coffee here because they make it so hot I burn myself every time. Because of the lines I suggest avoiding on the weekend, instead go in after rush hour during the week, by 10am most days there's no line so a late breakfast or early lunch are perfect. No toasting either :o( Delicious, but not ideal.

Don't be fooled - this is just another bagel shop in NYC. Save yourself the headache and go to Brooklyn Bagels just 2 blocks north on 8th Avenue (same side of the street). Today is the last day I will ever go here. Here are my issues: -The staff gives you an attitude about toasting bagels (because they are supposedly baked fresh). I've never seen the staff refill the bins with fresh bagels and I've been here tons of times (I live around the corner on 22nd Street). I'm not sure where they got the idea that fresh baked bagels and toasted bagels have the same texture. The staff already moves at a glacial pace so what is the issue with another minute for toasting? -The eggs take FOREVER to make and they often get the order wrong. Today I ordered the usual LEO (Lox Eggs Onion) on a whole wheat wrap (I order this nearly every time). On average it takes 15-20 minutes (these must really be some slow cooking eggs they buy from their supplier). Today they put the order on a roll (because whole wheat wrap and roll sound very similar) and then gave me an attitude when I told them I didn't think it was my order. ***Ironically if you place a pickup Seamless order, your eggs only take 2-3 minutes and the order is always ready before I even get to the deli*** -The staff pisses and moans about making eggs. They also will not make eggs past 1PM if you are ordering in the deli, but do not have this policy up anywhere. I always order eggs for breakfast and I often get a look from the staff member taking my order that translates to "You are really going to ask me to make you eggs?" or "The grill closes at 1PM". The times when I've been told the grill is closed, I simply go on Seamless and order my eggs there. The result? Eggs in minutes. This is proof that Murray's places LESS VALUE on customer's who shop in store rather than online -The line is out the door 9 out of 10 times. I think this has to do with the piss poor system Murray's uses to take your orders. I've gotten so frustrated at times with the length of the line that I've ordered Seamless pickup while in line and have had my food in hand a few minutes later. ***This means that anyone ordering onilne is prioritized over those who wait patiently in line*** -The prices are too high for what you get. In fact, the staff doesn't do ANYTHING to make the customer whole. Today, after waiting an extra 10 minutes for my food after it was made up wrong, I asked for a top off on my iced coffee. The girl at the register went to charge me another $1.00 for topping off 1/3 of my cup. When you think about it, it doesn't cost Murray's much at all to offer a free top up when they've already messed up their customer's order. In my opinion, this is a horrible business practice

Overrated. Bagels are chewy and doughy. No flavor either. And they dont toast which I understand takes too much time when its usually very busy, but I think it would've enhanced the flavor. Plus thats just how I like my bagels. BK bagel up the street is way better IMO.

Always been a fan of Murray Bagel since my first visit at the Greenwich Location. I come here always for a good ol' Lox - what they call "Traditional" on their Menu. No Toasting, just a fresh chewy with perfect proportion of fillings. (No nasty oozing of too-much cream cheese, nor chucks of raw red onions) Filling: Salmon Belly, Red Onions THIN silvered (my faveeee!!), Red Tomatoes (my only disappointment, bc it was a little under ripe), Capers (a must duh), and regular cream cheese. My recent visit I tried the "David Burke" special, which is their Traditional lox but with "Pastrami Salmon". Gives it more a cured-salty taste. Absolutely satisfying. They also have better options of bagels such as Health and Sesame Brans, which I thought is very special. They also brew La Colombe Coffee here A "new" person was helping me that day (just my luck) so it took him a while to build my bagel, but usually service moves pretty quick.

Good breakfast food but terrible quality control on taking orders. Ordered from them more than 5 times (in person) and each time they got the order wrong. Nothing complicated just a bacon egg and chees with extra bacon. They charge me for the extra bacon and each time the sandwich still only has two pieces of bacon. Five times this has happened. Seperately I ordered a sandwich again this morning, after waiting 25mins for them to make my order, I get to office and its yet wrong again. The point here is check your order before you leave because your likely paying for something your not getting.

Am I crazy or is $4 for an avg bagel w olive cream cheese insane? Nice enough folks, but unless you're desperate, walk on by...

I understand that fresh bagels need not be toasted, but if the bagels have been sitting out long enough on a cold day, the dough does sort of stiffen and is not as enjoyable to eat. We had the sun-dried tomato with roasted garlic cream cheese on a garlic bagel, which sounds a lot more flavorful then it was (def not enough garlic bits on the bagel for me...but that's just my preference). We ate it so as not to waste, but will not be returning.

Their bagels are fresh and good. They are one of the few locations in Chelsea that deliver! You do have to get in early on the weekends to be sure to get the bagel flavor you want. Decent cream cheese options including good tofu cream cheese. Their lentil soup is pretty good too.

Wow, great experience tonight. Wish I had some more cash so I could've tipped better- the guy that made my lox & cream cheese everything bagel was so nice! Even though their Levelup deal isn't working anymore he gave me 25% off. And the bagel itself is delicious- and they add capers, tomatoes, onions and a hefty serving of cream cheese. Make sure you plan a long walk to the subway after. The atmosphere and music was lovely. I only wish they had wifi and a bathroom (Brooklyn Bagel down the street and Starbucks across the street have bathrooms fyi). I would definitely come here again if I'm in Chelsea!

Disappointed by the service and quality of bagels. I came here to escape the lines of Brooklyn Bagel which is only a few blocks away and regret not going there. The line was quite short (about 2 people) and somehow it took me 15 minutes to get a bagel. I ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and it basically reminded me of those prepackaged bagels you find at 7/11. I tried to overlook the fact that they don't toast bagels for you, but its just not the same. Save yourself the time and go to Brooklyn bagel, hell you can even go to dunkin doughnuts and get better food and service.

We were in NY thought we should try something typical of NY. Now I'm not a big fan of bagels, but this place had pretty good bagels I would say for someone who does. I tried the smoked salmon cream cheese with whole/multi grain and also the cream cheese with bell peppers. They are VERY generous with their cream cheese. Murray's is in Chelsea quaint adorable neighborhood a bit away from the hustle and bustle of traffic and crowdedness that is Time Square.

Truly, the most awesome bagels you will ever try. The selection of cream cheeses are great. I always get the one with walnuts in it for the added sweet flavor to my CC. It's a quaint little spot with not a lot of seating, but great place to pick up breakfast on the go.

Anthony Bourdain may be an Ess-A-Bagel fan, but my bagel-lovin' friend Brian L swore by Murray's, which turned out to be the better of the two. Huge, chewy, and just what I expected from a NYC bagel. I had a whole wheat everything with low-fat veggie cream cheese, bacon and tomato... only they forgot the tomato (much like Ess-A-Bagel the day prior. Weird, right?). Next time I'm in Chelsea, Murray's will be my bagel shop of choice.

Get in and get out fast. I dream of this bagel, poppy with scallion cream cheese. They don't toast bagels and that seems to upset people. I toast everything and for Murray's I will succumb to the rules.

The men who I have dealt with two times I have gone here are total jerks. The second time I thought maybe it's like 'their act' but eh.. I don't like it and I don't plan on going back to this location. I'll try the one on Ave of Americas, maybe. No one deserves to be treated like crap when paying for something. Also, the pumpernickel bagel had barely any flavor.

I've never liked lox... until Murray's! Until Murray's, all the salmon with cream cheese I've ever had tasted too fishy or too heavily smoked. The lox here literally melted in my mouth and the capers and cream cheese did a dance across my taste buds. There is a great variety of salmon to choose from, as well as a large selection of cream cheese. We came here late on a Monday morning, so there was no line up. For a traditional lox and cream cheese with capers bagel, a wild coho salmon and cream cheese bagel and two iced cappuccino for take out, the bill came out to $31+. Pricey, but so incredibly worth it for take out to eat on a beautiful spring day at High Line park for a very New York time.

My favorite bagel place in the area. I'm in love with their salmon sandwiches--get them on whole wheat everything. I also love their plain cinnamon raisin bagels. So good that you don't even need cream cheese with it to make it taste good. The only downside is that they don't toast the bagels for you. Regardless, Murray's is a delicious option for breakfast, lunch, and sometimes, even dinner.

First off lets start out by saying if you like toasted bagels DON"T GO HERE. However I hate my bagel toasted so It's perfect for me. The lines are long, the staff once they know you smile and joke, otherwise are like drill sergeants ready to take your cream cheese type order. What I love about here is that as healthy as a bagel can be made, they cover it. They have whole wheat, multi grain, whole grains, and a few other really good choices that have flax seeds. I usually kill the whole health thing by getting half with butter and half with cream cheese and not the low fat one either. That defeats the point. I also like the bacon egg and cheese ( cheddar cheese is preferable)on a poppy seed bagel. The ice coffee is great too. It's not usually a place to sit and enjoy as it has limited seating and it's' always packed. Take it to go. It's by far better than brooklyn bagel up the street. Maybe one day they will toast but that will probably double the line around the block.

Murray's exemplifies what a bagel shop should be. It provides quick service and countless options of bagels, pastries, spreads and toppings all at reasonable prices (NYC standards) I had an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. My bagel wasn't too "bready" like most other places'. It was perfect -- hard on the outside and doughy on the inside. Exactly how a bagel should be! The employees at the counter are always helpful and polite.

  • William F.

I had a cinnamon raison w/ walnut maple cream cheese. Sounded better than the reality. The bagel itself was not crunchy on the outside or chewy/soft on the inside. Overall, not a lot of flavor of cinnamon, but the cream cheese was very tasty. Yes, they do not toast. Yes, it was an issue given that outside temperatures were in the 20's. The bagel was cold and needed toasting. Save your time and $$ and walk the block & a half to Brooklyn Bagels. Their bagels are warm from the oven (but they also toast), always crunchy on the outside and always soft/chewy on the inside.

The way this bagel shop operates is shameful. Plan for 15-20 minutes or more to get a simple bagel, not because it's busy but because their "system" sucks. It's chaos sprinkled with a mix of apathy and apologies. The bagels are great, but I like mine minus the aggravation.

Our office (an Epicurean publishing company) regularly gets bagels every Friday from the "best" locations throughout NYC. Murray's had come up as a place to check out. The bagels were mediocre compared to some of the other places (say Thompson Square Bagels) but the attitude and customer service was egregious. We understand that the decision not to toast is a somewhat common practice for some metropolitan locations but that doesn't excuse a vile customer service demeanor that was heightened by us ordering too many bagels of all things! Will not be going back ever. God forbid we give them business.

  • Erica J.

I came here when I was tired and hung over craving large amounts of carbs. The long line was a bit deterring, but they have so many options it took me that long just to figure out what i wanted. The Bagels are huge and fluffy, and they have almost as many cream cheese options (including vegan) as the Bagel Store in Brooklyn. Minus, they won't toast your bagel. Maybe they aren't supposed to be toasted, but if you're not going to be just a plain bagel place, just go the extra mile and pop that thing in a toaster, please.

These are, without a doubt, the best bagels in New York. My personal favourite being the Cream Cheese with Lox Smoked Salmon (and admittedly having never deviated from this I can't comment on other fillings!) is the BEST for hangovers and having a treat! Really reasonably priced and always smiling faces on the other side of the counter. This place is going to make me obese in the most glorious way

  • PJ E.

The bagels are super good but even though the grilled cheese bagel is on the menu, they always refuse to make it. I've been lucky enough to have it once. You have to get there before 2 to order it and sometimes even if you do, they are too lazy to make it. Take it off the menu then! That's my only complaint.

  • Kyung Hoon L.

Horrible experience. Those black serving staffs were so rude and i even felt racism that even though i went there at 6:20, they said they were closed (there closing time was 6:30) so i asked them when? Then they started to mock me by imitating my pronunciation with themselves out loud so everyone could hear. That was the worst unpleasant experience and though ive lived here in NY for 10 years, ive never faced racism so explicity like here in this store.

Disaster. This review is for delivery only. I ordered on seamless, it took them over an hour and half to deliver, and I live 7 blocks away from them. I had ordered a lox bagel and a Russian coffee cake. I called, they told me it was on its way, I get my order half an hour later. No Russian coffee cake. I call and say please refund the money, I'm not waiting over an hour again for the rest of my order. I unwrap my bagel and see a strange yellowish substance oozing from the bottom of the bagel. Yes. It's Russian dressing. Russian dressing on a hard, ice cold bagel with lox and capers. Never again.

Before I start this review, I want to put it out there that I wanted to share my first bagel experience at Murray's with my husband so I didn't get to eat the bagel right away. I ate it about an hour later. That being said, I still stick by my rating of 3 stars and these are the reasons why: 1) One onion bagel + one sesame bagel both with Nova Scotia Salmon cream cheese is $9.00. For that price, it better be the best damn bagel I ever had in my life and it wasn't even close to that 2) Bagels are supposed to have a great texture - chewy, soft, with a little bit of give. The sesame bagel was way too chewy, border lining on tough. It kind of hurt my jaw a little toward the end. The onion bagel though, was much better - it had a nice texture and there was a nice sweetness in the onions on top. 3) Service is extremely slow. It's really not that hard to put cream cheese on a bagel and then ring someone up. It really shouldn't take 10 minutes. I do have to give credit where credit is due though - the lox cream cheese was delicious. The perfect amount of salty creaminess. I love bagels. I think I'll have to go back again someday when it's not so busy and eat one hot and fresh off the premise and give it another review.

  • Grace S.

Docking one star because the hot food here could not take any longer. Why does it take so long to make a sausage, egg and cheese on a toasted bagel? I have to opt for the delicious lox instead because I don't have 20 minutes to sit around when I want to grab and go. They serve La Colombe coffee, which I have loved since my Philly days, but honestly, I cannot deal with the line and how long this place takes.

  • Brian S.

I enjoyed my bagel and drink and it's a very nice place but they lost me when I was told they don't taste bagels. What kind of bagel store won't toast a bagel. I will be going elsewhere for now on. I wouldn't of eaten my bagel if I didn't feel bad that the counter person didn't already cut my bagel

Really great bagels in NYC! I got a sesame bagel with sundried tomato cream cheese! yum. Crazy how they don't toast their bagels here (which i did not know before I arrived) but they don't need to be toasted! Good just the way they are.

I LOVE a good bagel. I stumbled on Murray's Bagels in Chelsea about a month ago while running errands in the neighborhood on the weekend. During late morning on the weekends, it is BUSY so you'll wait awhile but the bagels are so good you know why people are waiting. They have a very large selection of bagels and I was particularly excited to find they have a whole wheat everything bagel. You see everything bagels are my absolute favorite but for the past several years I've given them up for the healthy grain or whole wheat variety so I was overjoyed to find I could get a healthy dose of grains AND all those delicious 'everything" flavors. Murray's has a near dizzying array of cream cheeses --from sweet to savory and everything in between. I love veggie cream cheese and theirs did not disappoint. And the portion was generous. I wanted to try every one in the case. They also do bagel sandwiches and have coffee, juice and some baked goods, but the bagels are really the main attraction at Murrays. The only negative to my first Murray's experience was actually due to a snobby patron. When I ordered, I asked for my bagel toasted (which is how I prefer them) and the person in line behind me rolled their eyes, let out a big sigh and said "they don't toast bagels here". It was in a very rude tone of voice and I could see the guy working the counter get very embarrassed. I just apologized for the oversight and just moved on. I came back one weekend day more recently in the late afternoon and the place way way understaffed. It seemed like only one guy was working so though there were only maybe 5 people in line in front of me, it took forever to get my bagel. Net/net- Murray's is not he place to go if you're in a hurry but if you have some time and you want a great NYC bagel, this is a good spot.

This place is really awesome! I came here for breakfast on a Sunday with a friend and got their sausage, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel and another plain bagel with apple walnut cream cheese. I also got a chocolate croissant, which was a huge mistake -- definitely not bad but the money would have been much better spent on another sausage, egg, and cheese on a bagel. By the way, sausage, egg and cheese on a bagel is like, one of my favorite breakfast foods ever. I'm super picky with these and must say that Murray's Bagels did an awesome job preparing it. All parts of the concoction were crafted with perfection -- no complaints at all (which is very rare). They also prepared this in amazing speed; much quicker than a deli, which I found very impressive. Seating is quite limited so I'd come here early (ie. pre-11am), especially on a weekend. I'd definitely come here over and over again. Great prices for an amazing wad of food and cute ambiance.

I miss living in Chelsea mostly just because of Murray's. Though they get visibly annoyed when I order a chai and fight over who will make it, they still have the best bagels and tuna in manhattan. I love that they don't toast-who toasts a fresh bagel?!

Had a really gross experience here which sucks because their bagels are awesome. They are so great that many people including myself will wait in the long line just to get one. Last time I was in I noticed the line was reaally long taking usually long to order. By the time I got up to order I realized why. One of their staff was trashed at noon. He tried to hand me a bagel when I hadn't even ordered yet, it was ordered by one of the guys before me. I'm not talking stayed out all night and still might be drunk, this guy was on something heavy. He was dozing off while talking to people, slurring and had to ask every person what they ordered multiple times. Everyone in line noticed it and even the employees. It totally grossed me out I immediately thought if this guy doesn't care enough that he'll show up to work like this he definitely doesn't care about the sanitation or health codes here. When I got home it didn't surprise me I didn't get the right order after repeating it 4 times to him. I called the manager to let him know one of his employees was fucked up and he said "I know we're dealing with it right now" While it made me never want to go there again, I stopped in today because normally the staff is really fast, friendly and again their bagels are so good. I was SHOCKED to see that guy still works there! I immediately lost my appetite. To make it worse he was rude and pushy to the girl in line when I walked in. I'm never going there again, having an employee like that dealing with your customers shows what kind of business you run

nice place in Chelsea for breakfast; nice assortment of bagels and spreads, lots of options! everything bagels come in regular and whole wheat. got the whole wheat oat bagel with butter and jelly (about $3) - was okay. bagel was a little hard but tasted rather decent. couldn't tell if it was the butter or the bagel that tasted salty, and the bagel was obviously next to an everything bagel at some point in it's life because i could taste the onion at some points in my meal...

They don't do toast a bagel!!! Why? and the price I paid for an un-toasted bagel is unreasonable too. I asked to have pastrami with Swiss melted on an Everything bagel. Then the guy said there are no melted cheese and also no toasted a bagel!!! Sorry, plus they sell beer and wine instead of toasted a bagel. Poor Chelsea! this place have been changed. It isn't an authentic Bagels shop anymore.

My coworker and I went to Murray's Bagels today around 1. It was both our first time. The young man behind the counter (Matt) who made our bagels was very kind and patient as we took our time to order. He was also very polite. The young woman who ran the register (I never got her name) was very kind and also had outstanding manners. We got our food, very delicious, and ate every bit. We then were sitting and relaxing when another employee was working near us. His name is Felix, and he does maintenance for the different locations. We had the nicest conversation with him. He told us to have a nice day and then walked away. Seconds later he popped back to our table and bussed our dirty dishes- even though he is a maintenance worker and not responsible for bussing our table. Murray's Bagels just gained two new life-long customers. We are so pleased with our experience today. The only thing that upsets us is how fat we will probably get from all the bagels we are about to eat.

Delicious delicious everything bagels. While popular, this place wasn't super full and the line went really fast around noon on a Saturday. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars is because they don't toast bagels, which I thought was a little weird. What bagel place doesn't have a toaster?

i moved to NY because of this bagel shop. Fresh fish, creamy cream cheese, fluffy bagels (don't toast). Order something crazy, or stick to a whole wheat everything bagel + BEC. It gets really crowded on weekends, so avoid peak breakfast times. I could eat a Murray's bagel every single day.

  • Vanessa M.

Murray's Bagels and Leo's Bagels downtown are the best bagels in nyc by far. They are perfectly made with a little crunch outside but soft inside. Murray's also makes flat bagels in a bunch of flavors that I love. Their cream cheese spreads are great as well as their bagel sandwiches. I would come here every morning before my weekend classes and indulge in a bagel sandwich or some sort and coffee. I am actually kind of glad I don't live too close and it requires a long walk because I would gain too much bagel weight!

Poor job of spreading and amount of cream cheese Bagel was stale and bland with little to no texture I'll stick with Brooklyn.

DELICIOUS!!! A neat find on a whim. The husband and I were hungry. He said, lets check this place out. I was like, um... (we have already passed up 10 restaurants and cafe at this point), fine. Food - Saw the Yelp review, and winner was the "Sun dried tomatoes and roasted garlic cream cheese" They were generous with the slathering of their cream cheese. I was in heaven! Had fresh orange juice, and I was one happy camper. Service - Was good, had to wait for the bagel to be called out for me to pick up. Other than that, I would totally come back here for another bagel. Busy - Yes! There were lots of people filing in after we stumbled upon this place. So it had to be good. Price - Decently priced, not expensive as I had expected. Reasonable and definitely would come back here again. Con - Not enough seating.. You would have to stand along the wall with their limited counter space in front of you. But lots of space on the left and right sides.

Nothing makes me happier than eating bagels in this fabulous shop. Bagels are the best food ever, but this bagel is just superb. I love all the different cream cheeses and all the sandwiches. If you are looking for a good and quick bite this is the place in Chelsea! Don't miss it!

Great bagels with a perfect crunchy/chewy ratio. Whole wheat everything is my favorite, and I love the kalamata olive cream cheese. Service is quick, although not always friendly, but this is, after all, New York. Overall a solid bagel experience.

  • Travis S.

Horrible customer service. I ordered delivery a few days ago and when it arrived, the coffee had tipped over and spilled all over the bottom of the paper bag, spilling the coffee (obviously) and soaking the bagel sandwiches (one of which was the wrong type. So, I called and asked for a refund and WAS REFUSED. The man, who refused to give me his name, told me that there was no one in charge of the restaurant and that I had to call before they opened at 6am! to talk with a manager. Then he passed me off to someone else who laughed at me when I told him what happened. At that point I hung up. Needless to say, I won't be going there again. Their bagels aren't even all that good.

Okay, seriously what is with these lines in NYC? I get so frustrated by the time I get my bagel, it's not as enjoyable as it should be. Oh well, it's not their fault. I've ordered the turkey bacon, egg & cheese sandwich on everything flat bagel and it was delicious. I honestly don't understand how people are able to actually get their "regular sized" bagel and not explode! I've also tried a few of their cream cheeses, all have been great so far. would pass on the coffee though. Overall, great bagels... the line is worth it.

    (4)
  • Amy P.

There is a reason there is a line out the door every morning. These bagels are great. There are so many different flavors of bagels and cream cheese to choose from that it's hard to decide. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the service. They are lucky that the bagels were so good because they could use better customer service. Granted, it was very busy and people can get impatient.

Remains my favorite bagel place in NY after all the years living here. From their Greenwich location I used to frequent during college days to the Chelsea location, Murray's never disappoints. When I left town for a few months, it was strangely one of the things I missed about New York among all the other much fancier things and places. They now have variety of tofu spreads for vegans and the health-conscious. They also serve great coffee from La Colombe. Something about the simplicity of bagel and coffee, done right to perfection.

Rarely am I moved by a dining experience to write a negative review - but this was pretty exceptional. I ordered for pick up at 11am on Saturday, and was given a 30 minute estimate per Seamless. I arrived at 1125am, and got to the cashier a few minutes later as the place was packed (as usual, and hence why I ordered for pickup). I gave my name and phone number. Ten minutes pass, no food, no word as to progress so I politely ask again. For a second time, I give my name and phone number. Again, ten minutes pass and at this point the cashier can see I'm getting frustrated. I ask her to check again, she goes into the back and returns - but says nothing. After a few more minutes, a different employee walks up and asks for my name and number (that's lucky number 3, for those counting). At this point, I've been waiting 25 minutes and I ask the cashier if they cannot locate my order, if it's in the process of being made, or what - and since she is busy and at a loss, she asks if I'd like to speak to a manager, which I accept. When the manager arrives, I say something to the effect of "I'm trying to be patient, but I've now been waiting 30 minutes for a pick up order that was placed an hour ago - at this point I could have waited in the line and likely had my food and been long gone". Her response was "I have people who ordered 2 hours ago who are just getting their food, so you'll just have to be patient. We're working on your order and it will be ready soon", and then she turned and walked away before I could respond. Ten minutes later, I finally had my food. Somehow they had put an extra bagel sandwich in there, but whatever. Arrive home, and despite ordering avocado on my two sandwiches (for an extra fee of course), none of the three have avocado. This place has good food, but the disorganized, slow, and downright disrespectful service is really a dealbreaker for me.

I could have found better options for a $14 breakfast. The bagel seemed smaller than at the other Murray's. Obviously some people like this place; I guess the trick is to yell your order rather than just speak in a normal tone so you'll be heard amid the self-parodying "New York"-style gruff efficiency. Since I wasn't loud most of the ingredients on my sandwich were skipped and I got only a sliver of pricey salmon.

Places that serve iced coffee know that sugar doesn't melt or mix in cold liquid. I told the Indian guy behind the cashier this and was so freaking rude. He talks over me to tell me that he knows the sugar isn't going to mix but this is the way their system works. I tell him this system makes no sense. He speaks over me to say "I know this". Ugh, you've got to be kidding me.

  • Michelle Y.

I LOVE my bagels toasted. It's not about the bagels not being stale, it's about the dough being warm and crunchy. After reading reviews for Murray's, I "followed the rules" and didn't ask to have my whole wheat everything bagel toasted. The moment I left I regretted it. The bagel was so bad, even for NYC standards. There was also a strange ingredient in the veggie cream cheese which I just cannot pinpoint. Pickles? Regardless, I did not like it. I bit into it and was immediately turned off.

  • Candice B.

I prefer my bagels not to be toasted, and I have eaten plenty of bagels that fall into the categories of ok, it'll-do, and why-did-I-bother. Murray's is definitely a this-is-what-a-bagel-should-be bagel. It seems better than the average New York bagel, which is infinitely better than most Philly bagels (but don't get too big of a head, New York, because we have you beat to hell in the pretzel department), which makes it a treat when I'm aimlessly wandering and eating my way through Manhattan. This was recommended to me by a friend a few years ago, and was very happy with my plain-on-plain. More recently I tried the lox cream cheese on plain, and it was pretty much the perfect little meal. I haven't been here when it's busy, so service was fine by me.

Just the bagel shop I was looking for... Delicious choices of bagels and cream cheese. I got an everything bagel with sun dried tomato cream cheese. It was the usual business of a bagel shop- a fast-paced line. My fiances order got forgotten about.

I dream about Murray's scallion tofu spread. "Tofu spread" wouldn't be the way I'd market vegan cream cheese, I mean it doesn't sound terribly appetizing to the average American who learned from TV that tofu is the butt end of every joke, but whatever. It's jacked up Tofutti (I'm assuming) and it is DELICIOUS. I brought a whole tub and a half dozen bagels for my family back in PA and they were totally into it. Yeah, that's right, my dairy-lovin' family thought the scallion TOFU SPREAD was awesome. It's my understanding that vegan cream cheese is actually pretty common in NYC bagel shops (rock on!), so maybe if I had more time to explore, I'd realize it's the same stuff everywhere, but I had it at Murray's and Murray's did it right. Oh, I guess I should say something about the bagels, right? They were mostly a vehicle for me to get as much scallion tofu spread into my mouth as humanly possible, but in all honesty, they tasted really fresh and definitely didn't need to be toasted. I'd come back here in a heartbeat.

The sheer selection and quality of the bagels and spreads are great. So many choices you would spend a while trying them all. Only negative about the pkace is the sonetimes gruff attitude by the staff. Big turnoff. But at least the bageks are fresh

First visit here, not to be the last. The inside was small and had good energy. The service was quick on a Sunday morning and the servers smiled. The Cafe Americano was delicious. But what perked my buds was the scrumtrilecent everything bagel stuffed with wild smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onions and capers. Ahh. The perfect crunch to dough ratio. Not TOO thick of a bagel where you feel like you are going to choke by chewing one bite. So good I don't live close by. So good. A must try!

I love this place. The service is gruff, but the quality is superb. I want to try everything, but inevitably end up getting the whitefish on a sesame bagel whenever I go (which is every weekend). The whitefish salad is perfect and changes based on what bagel you get it on. On a sesame bagel it is slightly sweet, and on an everything bagel it is savory and delicious. I've also gotten the belly lox (which I shared with my husband who got the whitefish), which is salty and awesome. Some tips: get in line and don't get distracted, place your order all at once (for multiple people and drinks), if you're ordering just coffee (they brew La Colombe) go straight to the register, they don't toast, they always slice things in half, and once you've ordered move straight to the register. I don't know how this works because it is always saturated with people, but I've never had a problem getting a seat by the time my bagel is ready. Yum, I want to go now. P.S. They deliver. Yes.

DON'T ASK FOR A TOASTED BAGEL WHEN ORDERING! It's posted on their website, plain as day. So, the first thing I do when I order? I asked them to toast my bagel. Ahh.. I'm just being Miley. Its what I do for fun. I stop in for a bagel and a Cafe Au Lait. I really don't eat bagels anymore, If I had to choose bread for breakfast its gonna be a croissant and a latte. Bagels are like a belly bomb to me, but the Brooklyn kid in me says Get a Poppy Bagel ya old man! We learned Mr. Murray doesn't toast a bagel. The reason why I ask for it? Because in Long Island they couldn't make a bagel to save their life. They're always undercooked and rubbery.. A good bagel is supposed to be baked with Malt and when you bite into it, there is supposed to be a grab. There is no dough ball texture when its cooked correctly. Lets talk cream cheeses. I love a fresh tasting cream cheese as well as flavor choices. Strawberry, Scallion, walnut raisin and my favorite, olive. I'm a lox guy too but not today. A secret item being served here that is the bomb diggity? They have great pickles! I ordered for breakfast no less a spicy chili pickle with my bagel. I grab all my items and bolt out the door. When I get to my breakfast spot (The High Line) and bite into the bagel with olive cream cheese? OMG, I'm in heaven! The bagel has the grab I'm used to, Its cooked perfectly, tastes great and not doughy. The cream cheese has a great taste too, just enough saltiness to satisfy my craving althewhile I'm taking a bite of my breakfast pickle and drinking my coffee. Murray's also sells great cookies, rugalah and they even make Matzo Brei! Murray, so you didn't toast my bagel. You still rock it baby! Go Murray.. go go Go Murray!

Just not a fan. Let's be honest, how many bagel shops are there in NYC and what distinguish one from another? To me, it's all pretty much the same but of course the stand outs probably offer you more varieties, better tasting spreads, good service, nice coffee etc. I hate the fact that this place has mediocre service and they don't toast your bagel. If the bagel is hot HOT AND CRISPY, then the butter and cream cheese DONT MELT! Let your customers toast their bagels, Murray!

  • Drew R.

Best spreads in the city. Bagels are good - not the best - and they don't toast, but spreads and fish high quality. Get a bagel from Brooklyn bagel next door, a coffee from somewhere else and go to Murray's for everything else necessary to perfect a bagel. The bagel with tomatoes onions capers and nova is a blessing from the bagel g-ds.

Really great bagels. I had plain with Honey Raising Walnut cream cheese and it was delicious. I don't like toasting my bagels anyways so that doesn't bother me at all. Also had really great freshly squeezed orange juice which was wonderful. Most people seem to get carry-out so there was seating available. Service was fast which was great. Definitely recommend.

It is hard for me to rate a bagel shop 5 stars, but they deserved it. The selection of food provided here keeps you coming back even if you do not want a bagel. I was overwhelmed by approval after taking my British friend here for her first bagel. The amount of options you have between choosing the right bagel and the cream cheese, or whatever you want to put on the bagel is endless. The service is expedient and efficient. The bagels are sizable and they do not overload the bagel with spreads. Perfect! There is limited seating. Slightly pricey, but worth it.

Basically, a chain store filled with stale bagels. They refuse to toast their stale bagels, which makes them taste even staler. You've been warned.

    (1)
  • Neelam P.

Pretty decent bagel but most of the stars are for their jalapeno cream cheese which not every bagel place carries. While it wasn't extremely spicy, it was still pretty darn good! They really should start giving people the option to toast their bagel.

  • Sarah A.

It's becoming more and more clear how obsessed I am with a good bagel. And it's becoming more and more unhelpful to my waistline that I keep discovering amazing new bagel spots. Service was super friendly. No line around 2 p.m. Great selection. I secretly love the snootiness (or maybe laziness?) that comes with them not obliging to toasting requests.

    (5)
  • Kathleen B.

By New York standards, not the best bagel. Also, they won't toast bagels. While I get it that fresh bagels shouldn't need to be toasted, I want to make that decision myself.

  • Male B.

I mean: the staff is rude. The bagels are great. But! if i'm paying that much for a bagel i wanted to be treated right. But god, are they good! they are HUGE! i was like i can't eat this, turns out that i could. I finished the thing in 5 minutes while people were waiting for my table like eagles. So...i don't know, kind of prefer h&h: cheaper and friendlier.

  • Joseph H.

Good bagel but expensive if you get lox, also they don't toast (purists). I got an onion bagel with plain shmear and sliced lox, $11.30. Flavor is good but salty. There are better bagels at better prices close by.

  • Clint H.

A solid bagel option in the area; quite possibly the best one you can find in the area. I've been here twice, and both times my bagel was quite yummy. I wouldn't recommend coming towards the end of the day though because the really popular bagels are sold out usually by then. If there's one thing I do have a problem with is that they don't toast the bagels. They just...don't. I guess they don't want you to insult the sanctity of their bagel?! Who knows. The bagels here are good though. That's for sure.

If you see a table when you first walk in put your glasses, water bottle and used tissues on it-fast. There will be nowhere to sit by the time you get off the line. The bagel was okay-I've had better bagels. Full disclosure: I got a whole wheat bagel. Who wants a whole wheat bagel? I don't. I was trying to be good to my body. Anyway, it didn't raise the bar on whole wheat bagels. That low, low bar. The tomato was beeyouteefull, so was the cream cheese and onion. My salmon-eater says the lox is the best in the world, or at least that area. I got a side of chicken salad and it was so good-dense with dense chicken. My iced latte was delicious (groove-ster acidic espresso has not infiltrated Murray's yet!) Regarding The Machine With Coils That Turn Red And Heat Sides Of Bread: They "don't t-word" because they can get away with it. Do you really believe that Murray has such refined bagel-sensibilities that it offends him to t-word? Murray spews toasted bagel crumbs all over his beer gut when he laughs at that one.

    (4)
  • Thomas W.

Murray's really knows how to make bagels. The service and selection are not at the level of their 6th Avenue store. Still, this place has quality food. I am not talking about the fact that they do not toast bagels. I respect the fact that they serve fresh bagels and will not toast. However, the service here really needs to improve to bring it up to the level of other top bagel shops.

  • Hoolia G.

Both the bagels and cream cheeses were delicious. The oatmeal was pretty boring.

    (4)
  • Lisa B.

Love it. After a 5-10 minute wait my bagel was warm and crunchy on the outside and perfectly cooked inside. A little heavy on cream cheese for my liking, but easily fixed. My latte was less impressive but passable. If you are willing to wait for the bagel of your dreams, you won't be disappointed! Definitely coming back.

Good NY bagel, crisp outside, chewy inside. Lots of flavors to choose from. My favorites were garlic, everything, and onion.

    (4)
  • Diandra D.

Love their chopped herring, but they also have a nice selection of spreads, cream cheeses, and bagels. The rugelach is great (what rugelach isn't?) and I really like that they have chai tea (iced or hot), and lemonade. Murray's is one of those staples on Manhattan that everyone should visit at least once. Just don't do it on a weekend. Because when you're hungry and craving a bagel with a shmear, the last thing you want to do is wait on a line that stretches out the store and down the block.

Murray's is one of my favorite bagel shops in nyc! I usually go for the classic everything bagel with regular cream cheese and it is always amazing. They give you a TON of cream cheese, so you get to choose however much you want. They have a nice assortment of flavors, including normal bagels in wheat! The people that work there have always been so nice and brighten my day. A definite must-try if you're on the hunt for the perfect bagel!

Definitively the best bagels in Chelsea and probably in Manhattan. The service is good and fast. Id do anything yo have one again. One of the reasons I'm going back yo New York.

Meh... I've experienced better. Minus one star: You took 20 min to make my Sausage Egg and Cheese. SPK Minus one star: You don't apply salt pepper or ketchup to my sandwich... I hate when places refuse the SPK... OK ill grab some ketchup packets... =/ Minus one star: The bagels are not that great. Sure they are small dense and chewy, but they just don't make the cut. Not to mention that pathetic small breakfast sausage that was cut in half and placed on my sandwich with a cold slice of american cheese. Hot, delicious, greasy.... This sandwich did not fall into any of the these categories.

This place was delish & I can't imagine bagels get better. A million choices of bagel types, then smothered and stuffed with a ton of different choices. Places like these make me wish I had a bigger stomach. Bagel Sammy? Sure! Cinnamon raisin w/ just cream cheese? Mmm hmm. Lox & a bagel? Sign me up!

  • Kevin C.

One of the go to bagel shops for me. A bit pricey but you'll find your bagel fix. They have a wide selection of bagels but i'm a fan of the everything bagels and the spinach bagels. The bagels are soft and chewy inside with that nice bagel firmness. Don't ask for the bagels to be toasted as they won't toast the bagels here for you. I would always go with the raisin walnut cream cheese spread or the salmon lox straight up or my breakfast bagel of sausage egg and cheese. Great with any of there bagel selections. They also have great lunch sandwiches too and their pastrami on a bagel is one of the best pastrami's in town. I'll be back.

Amazing fresh bagels. Try The Traditional - a bagel with LOADS of cream cheese and lox, some sliced tomato and capers. It's the best thing ever!

A friend recommended and rightfully so. Incredible bagel. Got everything--my favorite. So simply perfect. Quick and delicious. Oh, and there's everything stuff on BOTH sides of the bagel...no sad unloved side.

Oh, New York, I am grateful to you for your bagels. They are the most delicious bagels, and Murray's knows exactly how to do a New York bagel. The selection was fabulous, with an entire list of multigrain flavors (I really love that I could get a multigrain everything bagel), and every flavor of cream cheese one might need. I think I even saw vegan cream cheese. They have Martinelli's apple juice, which is one of my favorite things, ever, and a perfect partner for a bagel on a beautiful May morning. I had 'the Traditional' sandwich (lox, cream cheese, red onion, tomato, capers) on a multigrain everything bagel, and each bite was superb. The long line was well worth the wait, and we got a baker's dozen for the road. Minus one star for high prices, because it's bagels... But then again this is New York... Bonus tip: the highline is a few blocks down 23rd, and a great place to sit and eat, with fabulous views!

They have gluten free Udis bagels - unfortunately no gf made in house. Ordered an everything gf bagel sandwich (added avocado for extra $1.50) and left with a gf whole wheat without the avocado but didn't realize until I was back at the office. Too many mistakes for a $13 bagel sandwich.

AWFUL customer service. Can't review the food yet, because it hasn't arrived. Was ordered almost 2 HOURS ago!!!!! When we called to check, they wont even check to see where this order is, WTF???? Really?

  • Cassandra L.

My favourite bagel shop of all time! The everything bagel with plain cream cheese and tomato or tuna salad are my usuals, and they never disappoint! And I love the staff! I could devour a bakers dozen of those everything bagels every morning.

  • Stacey B.

I remembered this place fondly from a previous trip to NYC but things have changed. More expensive than I remember, and I'm sure they used to toast the bagels? No decaf for the iced coffees means eating then going across the road for a drink separately. Don't think I'll be back again Murray.

  • Terry C.

Since I have lived in the Chelsea neighborhood for years, this review is especially sad. The food (and sometimes the service) at Murray's has been in decline for some time, but they are still cashing in due to their name/history. Far from the best bagel in the city, and today (06/15/2015) I experienced the worst service possible. While attempting to order a bagel, the staff called me a Trader because I purchased coffee from Starbucks across the street, and then suggested I buy my bagel from them as well. Needless to say, I didn't feel the need to patronize them that day. But worst yet, when I called and spoke to the manager (Max) 5 minutes later, he seemed disinterested in my experience and I was blown off.

I was in NYC for the weekend from DC and wanted to bring some bagels home to two NYC expatriate friends. Ran out of time and did a random google search. I was 2 blocks away so ran in and grabbed a dozen, along with a couple sandwiches. Man oh man oh man, the bagels and the sandwiches did not disappoint. The turkey sandwich was spot on. So fresh. Same with the roast beef. Don't get me started on the pumpernickel bagels. I'm a fan. Will be back and recommend to whoever I can! Thank you!!

My first meal in New York to kickoff what I call my eat-cation began here! My boyfriend and I came here for New York bagels and coffee. I got the salmon lox bagel with capers and onions. I honestly was so overwhelmed with the choices of salmon I had, I just chose the cheapest option! They pack your sandwich with lots of salmon, so if you like salmon you won't be disappointed! My boyfriend got an everything bagel with cream cheese. He asked for the bagel to be toasted, but the declined his request. As we sat down we realized the back of their shirts said 'We don't toast'. I was very satisfied with my breakfast here! Great bagels! I just wish they toasted!

I must say I have some kick ass friends. One of my friends had to go back to NY this past weekend for some family shindig.....so of course what do I ask for? "Bring me back some carb-a-licious yummy bagel or pretzel...or both!" She comes into work this morning...drops my Murray's Bagels - Chelsea bag off at my desk and states "I'm sure you've never had an authentic pumpernickel anything...so here you go!" I couldn't wait to get this bad boy in the toaster!!! My first authentic NY bagel!! (Yes she snuck this in her baggage on the plane....No we do NOT have authentic NY style bagels here in CA. I must say even for this bagel being one day old...having took a flight across the country...and waiting all day in my filing cabinet...it's still pretty damn good!!! Thank you Murray's for satisfying one of my bucket list items..."Eat An Authentic NY Style Bagel"

The hype machine is true, Murray's is the king of bagels in NYC. This location isn't as packed as the 6th Ave shop but you'll still have to wait during the morning rush. I'm a poppyseed addict and the poppyseed bagel here is the best I've had. I order it lightly toasted with cream cheese, red onions and tomato. Bombdotcom! For all you Cali kids reading this review, try ordering red onions and tomato at your local bagel shop (if you have one). You won't find it at Panera, Au Bon Pain, Starbucks, or whatever chain you're thinking of. You haven't had a bagel until you've had one at Murray's. Trust me...

Good lord, what a circus! And not the fun kind of circus, but the nightmare kind, where clowns haunt your dreams. Yes, Murray's bagels are good, and if bagels are all you're after and you're standing right there watching the employee select and bag them, you'll do OK. But Murray's offers a bunch of other stuff too, and after living in the 'hood and spending untold dollars there over for a dozen years, I've, sadly, come to the conclusion that if you order a breakfast sandwich, god help you: Your order will be wrong when it finally (emphasis on finally) comes, or it won't come at all. Remember Weebles, as in "Weebles wobble but don't fall down"? That's the situation behind the counter. Absolute chaos and disorganization. I worked in food service (which I firmly believe everyone should do, along with retail) so I don't offer up this critique lightly. But, nope, sorry Murray's, I'm done with the incompetence. Don't mind waiting a while for a bagel, or a bag of bagels? Fine. Beyond that, not recommended.

I'm particularly and unapologetically fond of "the periphery of the culinary world", as one restaurateur once deemed it. Bagels, David Chang might say, fall into this category. While Murray's isn't quite the empire as some other bagelerias, I found their product to be top-notch but their service to be bottom-rung. I snagged the last Health Bagel, and got it loaded up with maple raisin walnut cream cheese, a delightful combination served up by a wench mid-fight with numerous customers. No (true/discounted) half-dozen, no toasting, etc. Plain $1.25 Eastern Nova LF $3.50 -$4.75 Plain $1.25 x 4 -$5.00

I was looking forward to enjoy a nice, soft, warm, bagel on a cold day. I walked into the store and before I can even look at the menu, they were rushing me to order. I looked in the counter and they didn't even label what flavor cream cheese they had. So I just hurried and order the David Burtka because it was right in front of me. I took the first bite and it was hard and chewy, and I thought they were supposed to be warm and soft, but it tasted like an old bagel. I was disappointed but the smoked salmon and the cream cheese made up for that bagel. It was alright, but if you visit, make sure you know what you're getting before ordering so you won't be disappointed.

While on holiday in NYC, we ate here everyday for breakfast. 2 feet of snow on the ground so the "Drinking chocolate" and bagel with lox gave us the energy we needed to trek around town!! All I can say is...Y U M M Y!! WISH we had these bagels in Texas.

Well Murray's, I gotta say you surprised me. I did not think I would be too crazy about you, with your lack of toasting, and your somewhat mixed yelp reviews. Yet I think you are pretty great. And let me tell you why! First off the bagels are so fresh they really don't need to be toasted. My bagel was warm enough to melt the peanut butter that was generously smeared onto it, and it was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. It was everything a bagel should be. I haven't eaten my huge chocolate chip cookie yet, but it looks amazing. The selection of bagels was great - a number of flavors, including several wheat varieties. And all kinds of other stuff like about 17 types of lox and one thing that was called pastrami smoked salmon whatever that is. The line is long, and it doesn't move super quickly, but the people who work there are so friendly and happy it reminded me of the midwest. Not the typical hurry hurry mentality that you often find in the city. That said, for that reason, the line does not move very quickly. Luckily I was happy to look around at all the different items they carry and the many chalkboard menus. And there is always people watching which is just great. I must say I do find Murray's to be pretty spendy. I think my bagel with peanut butter was over $3 which is a lot. Then again in bagel shops in general pricing for peanut butter varies quite widely - sometimes it's super cheap and sometimes super expensive. It is weird. Considering how delicious my bagel was though, I didn't mind. Murray's, I will see you soon!!

WOW WOW WOW I guess I love this place so much because living in Florida we do not have bagels, or deli's this amazing. On my 4 day trip to NYC staying in Chelsea I ate here two times. The bagels are amazing, and the fish is super fresh. I had a Nova sandwich both times, with capers, red onions, and tomatoes. All the toppings were good quality, and very fresh. The line system moves fairly quickly. I went in Saturday and the line was literally out the door. So I figured a place with a line this long with 1,000,000 places to eat in NYC MUST be good !

I told myself a year ago that if I came back to Murray's, I'd order something really special. Yeah, I'm way too lazy to open my mouth as wide as one of those special bagels would require me to. That said, I just got a cinnamon raisin bagel, toasted, uncut. Plain, simple, a tad boring, but delicious -- OMG, they should make it a special and call it a "Washingtonian"! I thought I had "DC" stamped on my forehead given the look the guy gave me when I ordered it. Anyways, the bagel itself was massive, so I really couldn't imagine putting too much in it. High-quality stuff.

  • Frances L.

Not bad at all, the lox cream cheese was great. The service was friendly but took way longer than necessary for one bagel. A bit pricey for bagels too but the quality of the lox cream cheese will definitely warrant an occasional treat.

I do not see why this place got such a good rating. Ok for a famous New York bagel Store i expected something better. I cam here for breakfast one day and all i got was orange juice and an Onion Bagle with scallion cream cheese. For just that it was $11. The bagle was pretty burnt and the cream cheese was to thick. I came back again, thinking it might be better and it was the same thing. The store is really busy and they dont do toasting. I give credit though for the store, location and variety. Over all it was ok, but I dont think i would want to come back again and spend like $10-15.

"I gawt a bagel at Murray's the otha day" I am saddened that I don't work two blocks from Murrays any longer. I seriously crave bagels from here. All bagels are made in house and wicked fresh even for a late lunch meal. Last I went my experience got even better. They have these new bagels called "flatzels" (might have messed that up) in a whole wheat everything variety! For those of you that like a scooped out bagel, this is the way to go! For me i always felt like a nancy asking for scooped out. I will admit there is almost always a line and the help seems a tad disorganized.

Perfect for taking away your love for bagels...or breaking your jaw or a tooth. They don't toast bagels. Don't even ask, it says so on their uniform. Gold medal winners of the "Bagel Snob Awards". Plus their kale frittata looks and tastes like plastic. Could be because when you order it, they grab they one in the display which looks like a fake one the have their just so you can see what they look like. But no, thats the ACTUAL one. They even have the nerve to ask you if you want them to heat it up. "No sir, I want a cold, stale, flavorless frittata that's been sitting in your display since you cooked it HOURS ago". $8 in the garbage (literally, I threw it away because I couldn't eat it). I don't know how they dare to serve such bad food. Maybe that's their thing. It's a gift. Not worth the carb intake.

Perfect bagel for NYC. Place was busy for a Sunday am, so that's a good sign. Bagels were the perfect amount of chewy. Almost would say wish it was toasted but afraid that would mess it up. Staff was just what I wanted in the city, a little bit of attitude. Would go back again for lunch as looks like they have a good lunch sandwich and spreads menu. Cream cheese was all I wanted in the morning.

A staple of my diet! I work in the neighborhood and I often stop in here for breakfast. The staff are extremely friendly and have gotten to know my order. The bagels are fresh and real, true New York bagels. They can be a bit heavy on the cream cheese, but I don't mind that, personally. The have a huge variety of bagel flavors and spreads, so everyone can find what they like. As for the fact that they don't toast their bagels- I know it drives some people crazy, but the quality of the food here is so high that it doesn't matter to me. Stop in if you're passing by- bagel fans will not regret it!

Probably some of the best bagels in New York, hands down. Good selection of your standard bagel store schmear but its really the bagels that are center stage here.

Wow! I'm from California and we don't have any shops like this. I could not believe the number of lox/ salmon options for toppings. Great salt bagel. NYC wins the bagel war. Pizza in NYC is over-hyped however.

I was told by a friend that these are the best bagels in NYC and I had to try it. We arrived there and there was a pretty big line. Good sign right? After awhile, it was time to take the order. Whoever said the service here isn't very great - absolutely right. The guy taking my order was a dick and after I didn't say exactly what I wanted after 2 seconds (literally 2 seconds), called for the next person in line and told me I wasn't ready for him. So I ordered, and the funny thing is that he couldn't even get my order right after giving me shit for not being ready (again, within 2 seconds). Yes, you're such hot shit for slinging bagels in NYC. Anyway, I ordered a lox sandwich (wild caught pacific Salmon) which was pretty good. Not the best lox sandwich I've had, but it was above average. After that I started eating the bagel plain as that's the best way to judge it. I love bagels and grew up eating them, so I was excited that my friend called them the best bagels in the city. I'd have to say - didn't do it for me. I did not find it up to par with typical taste of a NYC bagel and what they're known for. While they were better than what you could get in most other cities, I'd have to say not by much. I've had better bagels in NYC for sure but these weren't bad either. Slightly above average. So in short: Pretty good lox sandwich, workers who think they're hot shit for working at a deli in NYC (dime a dozen), long lines, and fairly overrated bagels, but definitely not the worst you could do.

Decent bagel place, but doesn't live up to its hype. Bagels are basically the same as any bagel from a corner deli, except there's more choices here. In addition, murray's is pricier than the average shop, which I'd be willing to pay for if it were worth the premium. Come here for bagels if you're in the mood for one, but know that it'll taste no different from one from any other place and will cost more!

Excellent bagels here, but I would Rank it #2 (along with Jumbo) among bagels in Manhattan. In my opinion, Ess-A-Bagel is the #1 bagel in the city, followed by #2 Jumbo/Murray's and then #3 H&H/Tal/Zuckers/Davids. And if you like everything bagels, try Zaro's in Grand Central...not that the bagel is the best, but they put a ton of 'everything' toppings on both sides, not just the tops, which I love.

Every Saturday Morning I either go into Murray's or get it delivered for breakfast. The bagels are huge and always perfect. My boyfriend gets Tuna salad and I get whole wheat with butter. It's always fresh and my coffee comes hott. Best bagel joint in the city.

  • Shachar M.

Probably the best bagel in NYC. My favorite place and Saturday morning is not complete without a health bagel with tuna salad for me and a whole wheat bagel with butter and jelly for my girlfriend. The no toast rule was hard at first but the fresh newly baked bagels are just too good to toast them! The muffins and cookies are also Delicious! And the coffee is freshly brewed! Murray's bagels it's a must go place if you want to have a good bagel in NYC!

The staff hate their jobs so much they are playing around with you when you are asking normal questions. After a long day I don't have patience or energy for this. As a customer I'm allowed to be dumb as F. Oh and they don't toast the bagels? I just found out about it coming here to write a review. I was disappointed when I got mine untoasted and my friend told me I should have asked for it. I thought I was neglected but oh wow, am shocked to find out they don't toast AT ALL. That's not how you prepare a bagel!

Waited over 2 hour for delivery!!!!!!!!!!! Hungover and starving I ordered delivery, a simple order of bagels and oj. After over an hour of waiting I called the restaurant and he couldn't find my order. After putting me on hold for a few minutes he tells me it's on it's way. I live just a few blocks away so I figured it would be a few minutes. After another hour of waiting AGAIN I call and ask where they are and they tell me they can't get in touch with the delivery guy. So he retakes my order and tells me he will have someone rush it over to me. Luckily the guy on the phone was really nice and understanding because I was about to loose my sht. Mind you im Starving and still a little drunk and very hungover. Unless you have a few hours to preorder your bagel delivery and have the time to call in every few hours- don't order from here!!!!!!! Worst delivery ever!!!!!! Also they didn't even taste good. Dry bagels.

Murrays was just good, definitely not the BEST. The bagel was a little "doughy" + heavy for my taste. I guess I was just expecting more with the great reviews, and maybe its just my own preference, but I think I prefer a slightly less dense bagel. The inside of my bagel though was definitely delicious. I ordered the traditional... on the spinach bagel, and the fillings did not disappoint. Delicious capers, fresh tomatoes+red onions, cream cheese with layers of delicious lox. Again had it been inside of a different bagel I would have been extremely happy content paying $12.00 (not cheap btw) for a sandwich, but because I didn't like the bagel, I left this place feeling slightly disappointed, and give this place a 3.

Good grief, the fellow behind the counter balked at me as if I were Satan, himself, merely for asking to have my Bagel toasted. And then when I asked for Sausage, which apparently isn't readily available at the front counter, requiring him to go to another counter, he gave me the meanest look at let out the loudest growl. And then he tried to charge me for something I didn't order, because that's the way they do things, it's easier that way, and it's my fault for not ordering the combination as they have it on the menu, so it's my fault, he arrogantly and condescendingly shamed me in front of everybody, even though they offer the actual items I wanted for sale individually and separately, and when he realized this he just shut up without any apologies whatsoever. While this was happening, the other fellow behind the counter was very cordial and charming to the customers he was serving, and the fellow at the cash register did everything possible to diffuse the situation, but you know what they say... It only takes one bad apple to ruin the bunch, and unfortunately my bunch was ruined due to said bad apple...

Do not order delivery from this place. Ordered 6 bagels and a side of lettuce they gave me one piece of lettuce. I also ordered an ice coffee and it came spilled all over a plastic bag tape down the lid how hard is that to do ?!

Yet another place as seen on TV, and with a line almost out the door it must be good. The outdoor signage boasts that the bagels here are hand rolled and that they also serve homemade baked goods. The ambiance is delicious - as in how it smells. There is art on the walls featuring bagel making and old school seltzer and soda bottles, as well as jarred pickles are lined up on shelves. It's a small place (you could cram about 20 people into the seats available if everyone got really friendly), but it's designed for to-go orders. I ordered a wheat everything bagel with plain cream cheese (I didn't want to be masking the flavor of the bagel - if I was a plain bagel girl, I would have gotten the sun-dried tomato with roasted garlic cream cheese). I also grabbed an orange juice - fresh squeezed, and a small black & white cookie. Now, I waited about 10 minutes in line and my total was almost $9, but let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The bagel was light, flavorful and delicious. Hard on the outside, soft and airy on the inside like a bagel should be. And everyone is right; the water in NYC does make the bagels taste different - I think it makes them taste delicious! Bagels back in California will never be the same for me ever again. Oh, and that black & white cookie? Heaven. The frosting was so sweet and delicious and the cookie was light and puffy. So, so good! But be careful, if I would have gotten more than one, I would have eaten them all at once, they're very addicting. Bottom line - if you want some amazing bagels and baked goods in Chelsea, go to Murray's.

the best bagels in NYC. hands down. every time. i have fallen in love with murray's bagels and i can't get up! i would say i order breakfast catering for my office from murray's at least 1x/mo. the catering platters are awesome! you can even get a custom lox tray. the luxury of getting catering is that you can toast your bagels. like a traditional NY bagel shop, murray's does NOT toast their bagels. this however is not a big enough detraction for me to not gush over them. the bagels, cream cheese, and prepared sides are made fresh everyday and you can taste it! they make a pretty mean egg sandwich too. all in all, a NY institution that i frequent always.

Wish I could rate lower. Like negative. Ordered cinnamon raisin, toasted with cream cheese. I grew up in Jewish area in 1980's through late 90's. I had the neighborhood bagel store in my life. How can this shi shi Chelsea wanna be NOT toast bagels? Not even an option. Like he doesn't own a toasting mechanism. Coffee was horrible. Machine was obviously not cleaned or vinegar ran through it. I paid almost $6 for this. I will ask my priest to forgive my sin of going to this place. And they now serve beer and wine. Forget the bagels, everyone get drunk! You will need to be to eat here.

I ate a wholewheat bagel with Nova Scotia smoked salmon and cream cheese. Without doubt the best bagel I have currently ever eaten. It was filled with good quality smoked salmon. The bagel dough was perfect too.

  • Lulu P.

The line is ridiculously long on Sunday (shouldn't be a surprise) but very worth it. I ordered the whole wheat everything with Nova Scotia salmon. The bagel itself was delicious, flavorful, but a little tough to eat. The salmon was spread with cream cheese, capers, tomatoes, and onions so it was overall a very fulfilling and delicious meal. The sandwich was so fat and expensive (over 10 dollars) that I just ate half and ate the rest for another meal. Felt way too guilty for spending 10 bucks on bagels..

  • Kaitlyn S.

Came here on a Sunday morning around 9:30. I ordered a sesame bagel with tomato, onion, capers, and sliced nova. Bf got a sesame bagel with plain cream cheese. The bagels were amazing, but they weren't served toasted, which would have put them over the edge! The salmon was so good, and not at all fishy, obviously fresh. Iced coffee was too milky, but the fresh oj was great. Bf looooved the rugelach, we got one of each flavor (apricot, raspberry, chocolate)! I would definitely come back, but next time for toasted bagels!

so much variety on bagels, spreads, and toppings! all for a reasonable price! they offer bagels from plain, poppyseed, sesame, whole grain, everything, etc... spreads from original cream cheese, nova scotia, tofu spreads, etc... toppings from smoked salmon to veggies! endless possibilities of combinations! i got the spinach dill tofu spread on a health bagel for $5-6 and my friend got nova scotia tofu spread on multigrain bagel for $5-6. they are fat and big, the spread oozing out of the bagels! the first one had a refreshing, light taste compared to the dense and heavy taste of the nova scotia spread. the bagels were chewy and not bland- and i love getting bagels with sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, or extra grains because they add extra fun to the palate! this location was less crowded and slightly bigger than the original location- also the employees seemed to have been relatively new because they were all over the place when customers ordered (and it wasn't even crowded) if the employees get used to their working environment, i think their service would become better!

    (4)
  • Jacob B.

I've never seen so many different kinds of smoked salmon!!!! I need to keep going back so I can try them all. Their bagels are good but not the best I've ever had. They won't toast so don't ask. It's a nice little spot to hit if your on the way to work.

    (4)
  • Caroline D.

It's okay. The bagels would be better if they were toasted. My personal favorite bagel is pumpernickel, and the flavor left me wanting more. I had the Salmon/Egg Lee Sandwich, and I wish the egg/kale/onion mix wasn't made together, I would've liked them to be separate. The salmon taste was great!

My old job used to get bagels from here all the time when they did taste tests for lox and special cream cheeses. They raved about how the bagels were supposed to be amazing. After I ate a few bagels from the kitchen, I was informed they were from here. Did I think they were amazing? Not really. I didn't think they were that much different from the ones I got from the street cart in front of my office. Only difference is at a shop like this, you can order your bagel in sandwich form vs only getting cream cheese. Later I had some friends in town that stayed at the nearby Gem hotel. I told them that the bagels here were supposed to be pretty famous. Seen on tv, well known, etc. We came in and got a couple of turkey and roast beef sandwiches. Both were alright, but I couldn't really be fanatical about them. I can respect the no toasting aspect. Time = money, and the lines move slow enough anyway, so why slow it down. Also if you are proud of what you do and want your customers to eat your product a certain way, more power to you. Those that want a toasted bagel can have plenty of other places that are willing to serve such a bagel.

$1.25 for an unadorned bagel, which is more expensive than most places. At least it wasn't too sweet or salty.

This place was pretty good, but I think Brooklyn bagel a block down is better -- bigger, fluffier and cheaper. Pumpernickel bagel was really dense but tasty. Jalapeno cream cheese was delicious, and they give you a lot. I always ask for it on the side. They don't toast bagels which is a major downer cuz all bagels taste better toasty. Service was efficient and prompt.

Definitely the definition of a "New York Bagel". Big, but not excessively doughy, with the right amount of crisp. Tons of varieties and flavored cream cheeses. Very popular place. Gets super crowded any day of the week, that is why I rarely come here. It can get chaotic, so I'd rather go to a more low-key place to eat and enjoy my coffee.

great selection of tasty bagels with load of options and fillings. had the brkfst with egg, cheese and sausage & traditional. loads of cream cheese and salmon. friendly staff who helped a tourist out when ordering. everything fresh. did i mention fresh?

Friend told me to try Murray's Bagels, I'm not sure if she meant this one. It wasn't too far from our hotel so we went here. We got the Leo-lox, egg, onion on bagel $7.50 - it's pretty filling, we both finished one each. Took about 10 min or more to get our food. I really wanted a Novia Scotia smoked salmon w/ cream cheese on bagel - will have to try that next time if I go back to NYC. I think you can charge it.

Best bagels in NYC. The variety in bagels is amazing. The salmon options are extensive. I think its worth the wait on weekends. Everything bagel with lox and cc is always my fav.

  • Joe S.

Best bagel in manhattan so I thought it appropriate for a 4 star. Experience is pretty awful though, since they have no idea how to organize their service. You can easily wait 10 mins to buy bagels, which is sad- so no 5 stars. Also, to be clear, these are not nearly as good as a typical Brooklyn or Staten Island bagel store's.

I reviewed this place 2 years ago and boy has my view changed. I am not sure if the management or workers have changed but the attitude if this place has made a 360. The staff is pretty pleasant and accommodating either on the phone or in person. My office orders from here quite often for small and large events. The bagels are delicious and always fresh, definitely cannot beat the cream cheeses either. Thanks Murray's for restoring my faith!

Love Murray's Bagels! They have the best bagels in New York and they are huge! If you are serious about your bagels and spread, this is the PLACE to go! They got fresh bagels, yummy spread and sandwiches here. I wish I could indulge in bagels!

I'm going to start off this review by saying, I love Murray's Bagels so much. I had previously visited their Soho location, but since I was staying in Chelsea, this location was much more convenient. I came and got their plain bagel with the tomato basil garlic cream cheese, which was just as mind blowing as when I last visited. I seriously don't understand how they're able to make their cream cheese so tasty. I normally only like a thin amount of cream cheese on my bagel, but I dream of eating their tomato basil garlic cream cheese like ice cream. I'm pretty sure it would be almost as amazing as winning the lotto. When I first visited, there was almost no line and we were able to get our food quickly and even sit down and eat. However, when we stopped before our flight to pick up some bagels and cream cheese to take home, the line was sadly out the door and down the street. We tragically ended up not getting any to take home due to the horrendously long line. I now will continue to long for their bagels and amazing cream cheese until the next time I am able to come back and visit. The only things that could possibly make Murray's Bagels more amazing would be larger stores (and more employees), lower prices (they're pretty expensive- especially their heavenly cream cheese), and new stores opened up on the west coast (or even just ship/sell their products in stores here). While I know these things probably won't happen, a girl can dream.

Sunday morning and line coming out the door. $10 for the Norwegian Salmon special: norwegian salmon with capers, tomato, red onions on a warm, sesame bagel. Note the bagel was not toasted: high turnover on Sundays = constantly fresh bagels. And the non-fishiest lox I've ever had... wish I could've devoted more scrutiny to these famous bagels but the salmon ran away with the show.

I've been jonesing for a spinach bagel, an addiction I picked up back west where they are more common. So, I took a roundabout commute into work today in order to give Murray's a try specifically because their website says they serve them (rare in the city!). I get there and ALAS! NO SPINACH BAGELS! What's a girl to do? I settled for the whole wheat everything bagel with spinach and dill tofu spread. Was I pissed? Yes. Did I carpe the diem and order anyway? Yes. Here's the deal: *Toasting: I didn't have mine toasted and it was delicious. Probably the best untoasted bagel I've had in a very long time. I don't think toasting it would have added anything. The bagel was full but not dense, soft but with some give yet not rubbery. *Spinach Dill Tofu spread: So refreshing! Light and fluffy with a creamy whipped texture. Very flavorful and not guilt-inducing. Bottom line: The whole wheat everything bagel with spinach and dill tofu spread was absolutely delicious and very filling but not worth the $4.90. If I happen to be in the neighborhood then I may stop in, but I won't be going out of my way in the morning for another round.

I think it's safe to say that Murray's has ruined other bagel places for me. When I go somewhere else now I'm usually disappointed, and wish I had gone to Murray's instead (note to self: move to the west side). I've only had a whole wheat everything bagel (sometimes the flat one) with white fish salad, and it's amazing. I really think it's the best I've had. The bagels themselves are really good too, and not too big or too doughy. Whenever I am in the mood for a bagel this is the place I want to go!

  • Ashwin M.

Murray's has never disappointed me. Bagels are colossal and extremely fresh. Cream cheeses are divine, and you must try the melt in your mouth smoked fishes which are also a specialty! Try the walnut cream cheese on a cinnamon raison bagel for an interesting twist, it's excellent. Veggie cream cheese is also a top pick on any kind of bagel. I recently took some Murray's home with me for my dad's birthday and everyone is still raving about it. Everything bagel with bit of veggie cream cheese and smoked Scottish lox was heavenly. Make sure to add on some sliced tomato and onions to complete the experience :)

Just ordered an egg & cheese bagel on Seamless. Didn't meet the delivery minimum, so I added a piece of crumb cake to the order. The bagel was fine, nothing special. But the crumb cake had a giant piece of MOLD on it, right on top. I know they're not known for crumb cake, but I at least expected to be able to eat it. I am generously giving two stars because nothing was wrong with the bagel. I encourage the staff to LOOK at items before putting them into the delivery bag.

What more is there to say? Best bagels in Manhattan I've tasted. Even better than Ess-A-Bagel on 3rd which is seriously good. But Murray's plays in its own league. And less touristy and way shorter lines. Best way to start your day!

  • Bin H.

Great selection of delicious bagels & spreads! I've always heard great things about NY bagels, so decided to give Murray's a shot. It didn't disappoint. So far, I've tried their wheat bagel with strawberry spread and pumpernickel with plain cream cheese. Their bagels are very crunchy on the outside but chewy & soft on the inside. The menu's pretty extensive, but if you're into a simple bagel like me, you really can't go wrong with an everything bagel with plain cream cheese. This place was packed on a weekday afternoon, so I can only imagine how long the lines are in the mornings and weekends! But I shall be back very soon.

  • Adam S.

My favorite breakfast haunt in Chelsea. These guys make such fresh bagels that they won't toast 'em, and that's part of the charm. The reasons to go, and what separates this place from the pack, are the specialty cream cheeses. I especially like my bagel slathered with the jalapeno flavored type along with red onion and tomato. Yum.

Sunday morning and line was out the door...And for good reason! Sure, it's a little pricey for a bagel and whitefish salad, but it's damn well worth it. The bagel was fluffy and warm and everything that's right with the world. And the whitefish was equally as tasty. I rarely find myself around this area, but I'd absolutely make the extra trip!

We went to this location to pick up some bagels before we flew back to California, far, far, away from delicious New York bagels. Compared to the Greenwich Village location, the service here was much better and the place was cleaner. However, this could have been because it was later in the day (12-1pm-ish) on a Wednesday, instead of Sunday morning. But I love these bagels, and I wish that New York bagels could be exported to California!

I get a bagel and ask them to toast it - and ive done it a couple of times cuz i see those damn toasters and dont get why they cant do it LOL they say no everytime! its fun! Everything Bagel with Veggie Cream Cheese is my go to

I am a self-proclaimed bagel snob. Not only am I self-proclaimed, but I have also been accused by others (friends and foes) of having incredibly high standards for what is (to be honest) a meal consisting of dough, and whipped milk and cream. Truth be told (and perhaps I have a carb issue) a good bagel can make or break my day. After moving into Manhattan several months ago I have been oddly disappointed by the quality of bagels I have found within walking distance. NYC is known for bagels and while I found stores aplenty most of the bagels tasted like dirt. I went from eating a bagel a day to maybe once a month. The only thing that benefited from this was my waistline. And then today I walked to Murray's and FINALLY found high quality whole wheat everything flagels. The gentleman put a perfect amount of cream cheese on it (not too much, not too little- just right). For anyone not obsessed with bagel flats, the regular bagels looked tempting enough to make me want to convert (one day), and there were a lot of options. There were also a lot of organic drink and bagel options- an added bonus if you ask me. The flagels were on the small side (hence the 4 stars), but I will definitely be going back (and walking the 20 blocks).

    (4)
  • Gustav A.

A good place for bagels, and there's a LOT of them. However I'd recommend you walk 2 blocks north to 24th St and 8 avenue and buy perhaps NYC best bagels at Brooklyn bagels & coffee company.

    (3)
  • Lora H.

In my quest to find the best NY bagel, I tried Murray's. Well, while the bagels are true NY bagels - tough on the outside, soft on the inside, and frankly, you are not supposed to toast bagels if they are fresh and at Murray's, they don't toast your bagel. Lots of cream cheese options too. However, I can't give this place a higher rating because the people here are so rude. I walk up to the counter and they don't even say hello, nothing. Not even a can I help you. Just a stare down. Um. okay. I order, and ask for a toasted bagel. He looks at me like I walked off a spaceship and says, "our bagels are fresh, we don't toast." Okay, I didn't know that. So I get my bagel, and while it was good, the experience left me unsatisfied. I would say, walk a few blocks up and go to Brooklyn Bagel instead!!!

  • Eric O.

This is one of those ones where Yelp was very helpful...Tried a couple sub par bagels in NYC, and ran to Yelp for help. Many choices for salmon, perfectly chewy crusty bagels, and excellent cream cheese. Fast efficient staff, not much more to say, just a great way to start the day when we were staying in the village.

    (5)
  • Anne J.

I discovered Murray's Bagel by chance, I live just 1 block away! I am a very regular customer, and now it is very difficult to eat a bagel from another place. The staff could look rude, but they are really nice. Everything is fresh. They bake good bread and have very wide choice of sandwiches. The cream cheese, salmons and tofu spreads are amazing. I always take the "health bagel", which is a better version of the "everything bagel". You only can find this type of bagel at Murray's. A bit more expensive than the other bagels' place, but it's worth it; You definitely should go!

    (5)
  • Adria L.

Beware! I used to be a big fan of Murray's, but beware of all the Yelp reviews from tourists. The quality has gone way, way down, and I had a sinking feeling as I glanced at the crusty-looking fish spreads on the way to cash register after ordering. Biting into my bagel and lox, I was shocked to realize the bagel was easily a day old--it had that telltale stale bite, with no softness whatsoever. The fish tasted awfully fishy--not off, but heading that way. This place is resting on its laurels, but it now pales in comparison to Russ and Daughters or other esteemed lox purveyors. It's now an overpriced tourist trap.

There are 2 bagel places around the area that were recommended: Murray's Bagels and Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company. I honestly thought they were both very good. One thing about Murray's is that they don't toast your bagel because they believe that their bagel is tasty as is. It IS true. It's GOOD and the spreads and toppings that comes with it makes it absolutely superb~! Toasted or non-toasted, I liked Murray's Bagels better... But if you like toasted bagels, you can try Brooklyn Bagel... their bagels are also delicious!

    (5)
  • Abby W.

LOVE me some Murray's! I've lived in Chelsea for about 8 months and it's my favorite bagel place in the area. The service is always fast and food is always fresh. They are generous with the cream cheese which I love! I've decided I like them better than Brooklyn Bagels, which is just 2 blocks north on 8th ave. A note: they don't toast their bagels (apparently because they are always fresh so they say) but they are still delicious without being toasted!

    (5)
  • Michelle M.

I've tried this place a few times to see if maybe I'll like it better after a not-so-great experience... Their egg and cheese bagels are dry, flavorless. Coffee is mediocre. If you called ahead or ordered from Seamless, expect the following: - You will walk in not knowing where to pick up your order - You will likely stand in the regular line thinking that's where you should be - Once it's your turn in line, you will be redirected to a guy in the back of the shop who is handing the take out orders. - The guy handling take out orders will ignore you for 15 minutes - And when you finally get your food and take it home, your egg and cheese will be...average. If you go in the afternoon and want an egg and cheese, you will be out of luck. And you will find this out after you have stood waiting to be helped for 15 minutes. Waste of money and waste of time. Go to Paradise Cafe on 17th and 8th instead.

I'd been wanting to try this spot for a while now and I'm so I glad I finally did - this is an impressive New York City bagel with great taste and perfect texture. I just got a sesame bagel with cream cheese and it was a perfect way to start the day. I will definitely go back.

  • William W.

Good bagel, not excellent, but still better than most. They don't toast, they make their bagels fresh..... I make my bagels fresh at home, and I still toast them so get off your bagel nazi kick and buy a toaster.

Wait a minute. You mean to say that Murray's has a SECOND location? How have I not known about this? For all of the detours I have made to Greenwich Village for a bagel, for all the times I complained that there was choice little to eat in the vicinity of Penn Station, I could have just come here. I feel simultaneously uplifted and depressed. Yes, there is a second Murray's and it's fantastic! The layout is basically a mirrored reflection of the other location. There is the same lineup of bagels and cream cheeses and the usual caveat that they don't taste their bagels, so don't ask. You really can't go wrong with any of the choices. I loved my garlic bagel with kalamata olive cream cheese on this visit, for example. Murray's really is the standard for New York City bagels, and they are precisely what I long for when I am away. Where you can go wrong though is with the coffee. Oren's. Blech. Stick to the Boylan's or go with ITO EN. Man I love this place. Highly recommend.

Quite possibly the worst bagel and lox I've had for the amount of money I was charged. It should never take more than 15 minutes to prepare any kind of breakfast sandwich, but apparently it does here.

My favourite NYC bagels. Love the traditional--with lox and cream cheese. The sesame and everything are great. Very fresh. Sometimes service can be a little tuned out, but mostly very prompt. Good sides and coffee too. Sometimes a long line on weekend mornings, to be expected. Very nice platters were prepared for a small event and delivered promptly--neatly arranged and good value for the money.

I am from New Jersey. Yes, I said it. I am not embarrassed to admit it. Shun me. Go. Ahead. But one thing that Jersey has given me, besides 11 toes (kidding) is a very VERY good bagel pallet. I ate a bagel every single day while in high school. And before you snicker and make a remark like "well glad Jersey got one thing right" I ate this bagel not because they were the only thing available, but because they were delicious circles of perfection. I don't fucks with New York bagels. Once. ONCE. In awhile I will find a semi average ok bagel in the good ol Big Apple but it is rare and thus I tend to stay away. So now I am ready to admit that I have found my pearl in the oyster that is New York's bagel shell. (I came up with that all on my own *high fives*? maybe? come on it was good) Murray's bagels are delicious. The end.

We frequent Murray's. Regardless of the ignorant, like you are bothering them, counter help. I hate repeating my order 6 times, dealing with the attitude of its, probably convict, person making your bagel delight. I'm confused. I thought that without customers there would be no business. Someone should take note there about that. You are not the only bagel in NYC.

Only been here once. Bagels are way too cakey. Not worth the long lines or the hype. Their olive cream cheese was also not very good. May be back to give it a second chance.

You want bagels? You want lox? You want a selection of cream cheeses? This place is really the best place for FRESH bagels and lox in all of NYC. They don't toast the bagels cuz they're made daily, and you won't notice anyway. Lots of specials and treats - this place is always packed for a reason. Service can be "meh" sometimes, but there are a couple of excellent guys who work there! UPDATE 1/20/2013 I went yesterday and actually stood in line, which is against my religion. And y'know... after 10 minutes, black coffee and just a few bites of my "everything" bagel with walnut-raisin cream cheese it was TOTALLY worth it! Yes another reason to live in New York.

Fantastic bagels. Service was so-so, but the bagels make up for it.

This location is around the corner from my apartment and it's a blessing. Great bagels, delicious lox and hearty sandwiches. Only set backs: long lines and slow service but it's worth the wait! The cream cheese selections are abundant!

These bagels are very good but the place is always freezing. I'm in here now and the heat once again is not on. It's 36 outside and probably 45 in here. I'm done coming here. Feels like I'm in Greenland.

The bagels are good. The service not so good. I work in the area and drop by for breakfast or lunch every few weeks. The bagels are really good and especially my favorite, health bagel. I've had the egg breakfast sandwiches which are good but nothing amazing. I've had the whitefish salad which is very good. The food is really good. I just wish the service matched the food. Some people behind the counter are great while some people are really slow and don't remember the order. Service seems to take a big step down at lunch. The girl at the cash register doesn't seem to know the menu very well. I'll still come but if it gets any worse I'll go to bro only bagel up a few blocks.

So much hype- but was surprised at the horrid service. Guy behind counter acted like I was coming to extract his wisdom tooth. And thank you? He took it like it was an "eff you"... The dude was drier than the bagel I paid for.

Do: Get the salt bagel...or any bagel. These bagels are fat and doughy and yeasty and delicious. They are bagel perfection. Don't: Get the jalapeño cream cheese and put it on a salt bagel unless you want to feel like a camel in the dessert. Do: Get the sun-dried tomato cream cheese on anything. It's the perfect mixture of fatty, creamy, sweet tanginess.

Holy crap! Murray's is trying to make me fat! I ordered an everything bagel with peanut butter and steeled myself for the meager daubs of peanut butter that are de rigeur at the Breuggs. The woman prepping my breakfast reached her spreader into the vat of peanut butter and withdrew an enormous blob of the stuff. Then she went back for a second . . . and a third. Holy crap! I've just finished eating one half of my gigantic bagel stuffed to the gills with peanut butter, and I am stuffed and saving the rest for later. In addition to the generous PB portioning, the bagel itself is enormous and delicious. It's got this fantastic crunchy-chewy texture that makes me understand why New Yorkers get snobby about bagels, and it's thoroughly coated in everything toppings. This is a seriously good bagel. So why only four stars? A bagel with PB, a coffee, and a can of Diet Coke ran me eight bucks, which I think is pretty steep. I was watching other customers pay and it appeared that a bagel with flavored cream cheese will cost you in the neighborhood of $5. Holy crap! These prices would discourage me from becoming a regular here.

i'm so sick of this place, this is my third and last time. i come 20 minutes out of my way on my way to work to get a bagel and they messed up my order yet again. this isn't the first time they did this too me and i wanted to give it another chance. that will be my last visit to this place. not even to mention the guy who made my bagel was speaking over me, and making faces while i was talking to the cashier. i'm disputing my charge on the card as well. come here and get treated like SH****

Is it worth it on a rainy morning after Thanksgiving to schlep all the way over the long Avenue blocks from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue, to provide my officemates with some good carbs to take the edge off of their Thanksgiving day hangover? Today it was. I like snappy service, and even though there were 2 other people in line, they had me out of there faster than I turn the Gay & Lesbian pages of TimeOut Magazine when I'm riding on the subway. I wanted to avoid the cliche of saying these are as big as a "baby's head", but they really are!! With a nice little soft spot in the center. :) These bagels are really a deal at $12 for a bakers dozen. I like this store and the workers here. Always friendly, and they put out a quality product with awesome value.

Horrific delivery. 1 hour 15 minutes after ordering I call and the order is still in the store obviously getting colder and colder and NO apology. Don't bother.

Not a fan. Had the traditional bagel, which is lox, tomatoes, onions, and capers on a bagel. The bagel was crisp and crunchy; however, the inside was not chewy or fluffy at all. With so many options in New York, I won't be coming back.

They refuse to toast bread! I know their bagels are sacred, but they also refuse to toast bread for an egg sandwich. I asked them to put it on the griddle, and they still refused. I'm done with them - go to Brooklyn Bagel a block away!

Plain and simply awesome. I go there to get a plain bagel with cream cheese every few mornings. Appearance: it looks like any bagel shop in NYC. Kinda cold but I love the cold. Service: a little hectic for the amount of people that are usually here, but I've never had an issue with it. The people who work there know exactly how much cream cheese to add, I've never had to wipe any off my bagel. The employees are nice to me every time I've gone there. Benjamin is always super friendly, quick and funny. He jokingly during checkout says "that'll be $3000 cash" I'll hand him my debit card with a laugh and he'll toss it aside. Then he'll pick it up and say next time. To which I leave with my bagel. Great experience with great food. 5/5

Want a place in nyc that doesn't toast their bagels? Try MURRAYS! Want a place that runs out of everything bagels by 1:30 on a Sunday? Try MURRAYS! Was seriously let down as not only the above ticked me off but the person doing your bagel also takes your coffee order instead of someone else doing it at the end of the line. This causes a bottleneck at the end and there were literally three orders at the register all confused and all of us just trying to pay while getting our orders straight. I just don't get what they have against warming up bread instead of serving it cold.

Let me just put it out there and venture that these are the best bagels in the city. Okay, that said, I'm willing to be proven wrong. But I love this place. For a quick breakfast and a tasty coffee, Murray's hits the spot. I guess I'm not a bagel purist, for I order a bacon, egg and cheese on a (tsk!) toasted onion bagel. But I am also a big bacon, egg and cheese for breakfast eater in NYC, and I'm always searching for the best. I can say that Murray's easily makes the top five in this department as well. Sometimes the lines are long, but they move steadily. Often the seats are taken, but there is a counter to eat at. The pickles are okay, not as large as I'd like, and no one I've ever gone here with has left disappointed. Oh and the staff is friendly, especially to the regulars who visit often.

This is my favorite bagel place in Manhattan. Saturday I went to the location in the Village and it had a line to the door. I then went to their other location in Chelsea and the line was not much shorter. Are these bagels worth waiting 20min in line for? Yes they are. I'm sure if you go on a regular weekday you won't have much of a wait. These bagels have a nice crunchy outside and soft tasty inside. You will never have one that has been sitting out for a while. The turnover ratio is pretty quick here. I always go for the everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. Another reason why people come here is for the cream cheese. It's always tough for me to find bagel places that offer a wide variety of cream cheeses and spreads. I think I've figured out why the lines are so long here. A lot of people are either buying their bagels in bulk or they are a Type A personality. I actually heard one person ask if they could get one bagel with one side lox and the other side whitefish. Yeah. One bagel. Just order two if you have that problem. No need to penny pinch. Lines are something I don't like to endure too often, especially if it's a bread line. For these bagels, it's not a problem for me.

Got a white fish salad on wheat, and a sundried tomato on garlic. The garlic was surprisingly odd with nearly burnt bits on the outside. I don't care for dried garlic i guess. Fish salad was super salty (WAY saltier than expected) and really just tasted like a creamy lox to me. Bagels were really thick and chewy and i couldn't finish without my jaw being sore. Maybe I'm just not a fan of thick bagels, but these are definitely worth trying for the NY bagel experience.

The bagels themselves are fine. The problem was that when I ordered a bagel with butter and received a bagel with margarine. Yes, margarine. Ewwwww.

Murray's bagels are delicious. JUST DONT ASK FOR A TOASTED BAGEL. Ha! Lots of spread options. Servers are friendly and quick. Just dont argue about a toaster. They don't have it. The bagels are fresh and perfect as is.

Murray's Bagels, I live in Chicago and want to be in your business. Please let me franchise a location here so I can have your bagels everyday. It's not fair I only have them once a year. I work hard, love bagels, and mingle well with older Jewish clientele. I'm not sure what other qualities on need on my resume, but I'll fake it and write them on. When you're ready to come over to the Midwest, I'm all ears. Toda,

I love this place. Would have given it 5 stars but they need to toast their bagels. This is a charming shop. I had the raisin bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese. Yum!. Kid friendly place too.

The selection of spreads, bagels, and smoked fish are all amazing. You can definitely tell that the bagels are all handmade. Some may think the fact that Murray's doesn't toast their bagels is a bad thing but if you're there in the morning the bagels are still warm from the kitchen so toasting definitely isn't necessary. As much as I might love the bagels and the spreads I will admit the prices are a bit excessive.

If you are looking for a large restaurant, you will be sadly mistaken.. Instead, you will find a quaint location with some of the finest bagels out there.. a few steps away from the CE line stop.. daily lunch specials are godsents!!

They.DO.NOT.TOAST. Don't ask, you'll look like a tourist (ahem). Awesome bagel (even not toasted). Rough service, but what else do I expect from a New Yawk legit bagel place? Great house made orange juice too!

Far superior to their location in the village, I found this Murray's to be more organized, friendlier, and much less crowded. Bagels were delicious as always and the better visibility for their bagels means I'll certainly be trying out some different ones other than my beloved Healthy bagel in the future. Otherwise this Murray's succeeds in where the other fails.

My favorite bagel joint in NYC. Whitefish salad is fab, especially on a whole wheat everything. Great selection of lox. Everything super-fresh. And they finally upgraded their coffee, which was their Achiles heel, to La Columbe. Long lines on weekend mornings but they move fast. Be aware that seating is limited + no table service, but that's a plus in my book when I need to get in and out quick (and fairly cheap).

You can tell a great bagel place by whether or not they toast their bagels. Murray's is one of those. I walked into this spot on a Tuesday afternoon to find it bustling. The girl at the counter was very nice. Got a sesame with olive cream cheese and an everything with scallion. The everything was still warm, which was great considering it was noon-ish. My sesame was a tiny bit disappointing (I like a crispier/crustier outside) but both spreads were great.

We didn't know what to expect, but with the long line we were salivating waiting. The food was delicious, they have PUMPERNICKLE bagels. And the choice of cream cheese is great. I loved my white fish bagel, the lox schmear, and the turkey club. BUT................. There is very little seating. My friends placed the orders and I scouted out 2 tables for us to eat. I got lucky. And a good time was had by all.

Murray's Bagels are easily one of the best in the city. I recently came to fulfill my bagel craving with an everything bagel with Scottish salmon, tomato, onion and jalapeno cream cheese. The texture and crumb structure of the bagel was perfect. The bagel held up well to the other ingredients and I respect the fact that they don't toast their bagels. (Why ruin a perfectly good product?) I will definitely be coming back to try their other selections very soon.

Badass Chelsea bagels. Highly recommended hangover medicine. The bagels are fresh and huge and the cream cheeses are plentiful. Highly recommend the maple walnut.

Murray's Bagels is an essential port of call for anybody visiting New York. I stayed just a couple of blocks from Murray's on my last trip to Manhattan and found myself there every morning for breakfast.
